Kenya 7s assistant coach Louis Kisia, who is leading the Kenya Morans, has declared their determination to reclaim the upcoming Rugby Africa Men’s 7s Cup, set to take place at the Labourdonnais Sports Club in Mauritius from 21-22 June 2025.

In the 12-team tournament, Kenya has been drawn in Pool A alongside long-time rivals and defending champions Uganda, as well as Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana.

Now in their third week of intensive training, the Morans have been putting in significant effort.

Speaking exclusively to the SportPesa Blog, Kisia explained that most of the players in camp were not part of the core Shujaa squad that featured in the 2025 World Rugby Series.

He emphasized that integrating fresh talent into the team is critical to building strong squad depth, and that young players are pivotal in that development.

So far, so good. This is our third week training for the Africa Sevens with the Morans team. Most of the boys in camp are players who have trained with us the whole season. Probably a quarter of them did not get the opportunity to travel during the Series, so this is their chance to showcase what they have and compete for a spot in next season’s edition,” Kisia noted.

He continued, “Of course, we want to bolster the squad and ensure we have enough depth moving forward into the Series. The Series calendar is not out yet, but our main goal is to ensure we have two players per position. We want to give a chance to these young talents.”

Camp performance will decide Kenya 7s final squad selection

Kisia, 39, also stressed that while nurturing emerging players is important, performance and hunger for success will be the deciding factors when selecting the final team.

“Apart from giving the new talents a place, this is a tournament and we want to be successful as always. So, whoever raises their hand will be given a chance to play.

It’s all about the system; it’s all about knowing the playing policy here. So if you are good and conversant with the system, it becomes easier for you to make it into the squad.”

Kenya 7s hunt redemption in African title charge

The Impala Rugby head coach added that the team is driven by a burning desire to reclaim the African crown from Uganda, referencing Kenya’s triumphant 2023 campaign, where they defeated South Africa and secured Olympic qualification.

There is always everything to play for when you take to the field. The boys always want to win and make a good name for themselves. If you go to the Africa Sevens and win it, then you become African champions.

Remember the last time we were African champions was in 2023, when we smashed South Africa and qualified for the Olympics. We became the Africa champs. So we want that title back.

The group that achieved that is not here now, so it is an opportunity for these boys to make a name for themselves,” he added.

Kenya 7s prepared to battle defending Champions Uganda

On preparing to face Uganda in the group stage, Kisia expressed confidence that the team is far better prepared than in previous editions.

Playing against Uganda, the defending champions, we definitely want the bragging rights. So we’re going all in.

I think for starters, with the Morans, we have done two Africa tours. We did the All Africa Games in Ghana and also played in Mauritius.

In the previous edition, we did not have enough time because of low numbers- some players had traveled with Shujaa to Uruguay.

By the time they returned, we only had five players in camp. But this year, we’ve had the sessions we always wanted, and I believe we are ready to make a strong impression,” he reiterated.
