Kenya 7s

The second-string men’s national rugby 7s side, Kenya Morans, are gearing up for the Rugby Africa Men’s 7s Cup set to take place at the Labourdonnais Sports Club in Mauritius from 21-22 June 2025.

In the 12-team competition, Kenya has been placed in Pool A alongside perennial rivals Uganda, who are the defending champions, Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana.

Pool B has heavyweights South Africa, who won the 2025 HSBC SVNS World Championship, Burkina Faso, Zambia and Nigeria while Pool C has Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Tunisia and hosts Mauritius.

Led by Kenya 7s assistant coach Louis Kisia, Morans have included four new faces in their training squad as they build towards the tournament that will serve as an opportunity for the top two teams to gain promotion to SVNS Division 3 in the newly launched World Rugby 7s model.

Having already confirmed their spot in SVNS Division 2, Kenya will head into the tournament seeking to reclaim the African title they lost last year to Uganda after finishing sixth in the two legs of the tournament that also took place in Mauritius in 2024.

The four players include Kenya U20 forward Daniel Kipchirchir (Menengai Oilers) and Daystar Falcons’ Clinton Amukwachi who are fresh to the setup.

Nakuru RFC back Javan Otieno and former Kenya U20 captain Matoka Matoka return to the squad after being out for some time.

Javan had been part of the team last year but injury hampered his progression while Matoka was last with the team in 2021.

The other squad members are the regular Kenya 7s players headlined by co-captain George ‘Japolo’ Ooro, William Mwanji, Dennis Abukuse, Floyd Wabwire and Safari Shiasi.

Chrisant Ojwang, who suffered an injury in the season-opening Dubai 7s in November 2024, is fully fit and back with the team.

Lameck Ambetsa, Gabriel Ayimba, Felix Okoth, Philip Okeyo, Brian Ondego, Jackson Siketi and Brian Mutua, all regular Morans players, complete the training squad.
