Fijian-born Kenyan international Jone Kubu has revealed the overwhelming emotions he experienced while Kenya 7s faced Fiji in the Singapore 7s main cup finals over the weekend at the Singapore National Stadium.

Kubu was among the players who helped the Kenya 7s team achieve their best performance in the 2025 HSBC Sevens World Series, despite losing to Fiji 12-21 in the final.

The Kabras halfback made his debut for Shujaa in the Vancouver Sevens, and he also featured in the Hong Kong Sevens as well as the final round of the regular World Series in Singapore.

Kubu stated that the two weeks in Hong Kong and Singapore had been extremely challenging. While they struggled to perform in Hong Kong, they managed to rebound in Singapore.

“It’s been a brutal two weeks, starting off in Hong Kong and then moving to Singapore. We didn’t achieve much in Hong Kong, but the boys bounced back and, well, the results speak for themselves in Singapore. They were tremendous, and we’re thankful to all our friends and families for their continuous prayers and support,” Kubu explained.

Unforgetable Singapore 7s

He further expressed that it was a particularly special moment for him to play against his homeland in the finals.

“It was an unforgettable moment, not only for me but also for my family. Playing against Fiji for the first time in a final was really special. It was a great weekend, and the support from home has been incredible,” he added.

Kubu who so far has two tries,  reflected on how emotional it was to hear the Kenyan national anthem and also the Fijian anthem, which he knows so well.

It was deeply emotional (singing the Kenyan national anthem). I’ve sung the national anthem for Kenya about 30 times in the 15s, but doing it in 7s is a different experience because it doesn’t happen that often. To top it off, hearing the Fijian anthem alongside ours was quite emotional. I was just standing there, closing my eyes. I wanted to sing, but it was a truly special moment for me,” he reiterated.

The national team returned to the country on Tuesday morning and will have about three weeks to prepare for the relegation/promotion playoffs in Los Angeles this May, after finishing outside the top eight in the series standings.
