AFC Leopards’ title chase suffers blow after Mathare United defeat
  • AFC Leopards lost 1-2 to Kakamega Homeboyz when they hosted them at Dandora Stadium.
  • Ingwe slipped from fifth to seventh place on the table with 37 points.
  • Lewis Bandi attributed the loss to miscommunication in the squad’s defense.

AFC Leopards captain Lewis Bandi has shed light on where the team faltered, resulting in their 1-2 defeat against Kakamega Homeboyz on Saturday evening at Dandora Stadium.

The Leopards, still winless in their last five league matches (4 draws, 1 loss), initially took the lead at home through Victor Omune in the early minutes of the first half.

However, the in-form Moses Shumah equalized, and Henry Omollo netted the decisive goal in the final moments of the match.

Ingwe’s hopes of challenging for the Football Kenya Federation 2024/2025 title took a significant blow as they slipped from fifth to seventh place on the table, now with 37 points, 12 points behind leaders Kenya Police.

Reacting to the loss, which dashed their hopes of moving closer to the title or even securing a top-four finish, Bandi attributed the defeat to a lack of communication within the squad.

I can say that there was a clear breakdown in communication on our side today. Our defense was disorganized, and when they got their  two chances, they capitalized on them,” Bandi told Azam TV after the match on Saturday.

AFC Leopards created chances than Homeboyz

The skipper further noted that although the opponent created few opportunities, his team failed to convert their own chances. He emphasized the need for reflection and improvement.

“The opponent didn’t create many chances in this match, but we had several opportunities ourselves. Unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalize on them. In the end, there’s always a winner and a loser. Now, it’s crucial for us to go back to the drawing board and ensure we regroup and bounce back in the remaining matches,” Bandi reiterated.

So far, Fred Ambani’s side has won nine matches, drawn ten, and suffered six losses, with nine matches remaining before the season concludes.

While their fate in the Football Kenya Federation Cup remains uncertain, despite filing a case with the Sports Tribunal, they will not participate in this weekend’s round of 16.

They are still awaiting the final verdict following their controversial round of 32 match against Mara Sugar.
