Kabras Sugar successfully defended their Enterprise Cup title for a historic sixth consecutive time after defeating Uganda’s Stanbic Black Pirates 25-12 on Saturday, May 30, in a cross-border final staged at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.

This marked the first time the Enterprise Cup returned to a cross-border format since 1999, with four Kenyan and four Ugandan clubs entering at the quarterfinal stage.

Kabras and Black Pirates were the two sides that prevailed to set up a thrilling encounter, which saw thousands of fans flock in on Saturday.

Fresh from securing a fifth Kenya Cup title, Kabras got off to a flying start and needed just seven minutes to break the deadlock. Derrick Ashihudu crossed over on the right wing to hand his side a 5-0 advantage after Ntabeni Dukisa missed the conversion.

The Pirates gradually grew into the contest and began asserting themselves around the 15th minute, pinning the Sugar Men deep inside their own 22.

Their pressure eventually paid off when Alex Aturinda picked the ball from a ruck and powered over on the right flank for a try. William Nkore added the extras to give the Ugandans a 7-5 lead.

Kabras responded shortly after the half-hour mark through a well-executed maul from a lineout. George Nyambua dotted down on the left wing to restore his side’s lead at 10-7, although Dukisa was again unable to convert.

Two minutes before the break, Kabras made their dominance at the lineout count once more. Another attack down the left wing saw Nyambua grab his second try of the afternoon, extending the lead to 15-7 heading into halftime after the conversion drifted wide.

The second half saw Kabras come out with high intensity, and they struck early with a try from Patrick Lumumba for a 20-7 lead after Eric Cantona also missed the conversion.

Ashihudu then grabbed his second try of the match moments later following a brilliant offload from Walter Okoth.

The winger sliced through the Pirates’ defence, beating Timothy Kisiga in a foot race before touching down to push the score to 25-7. Cantona was again unsuccessful with the conversion attempt.

Allan Karuhanga reduced the deficit for Black Pirates with a try in the final 15 minutes, but it proved too little, too late. Kabras remained disciplined in the closing stages, comfortably seeing out the match to claim a historic sixth successive Enterprise Cup title.
