  • Gor Mahia’s grand coronation caps off SportPesa League’s debut comeback season on Sunday May 31, 2026.
  • Gor Mahia will take on Nairobi United at Nyayo National Stadium from 3:00 p.m. before being presented with their record-extending 22nd league title.
  • All nine Round 34 fixtures will be played on Sunday, bringing the curtain down on a thrilling nine-month campaign.

Sunday May 31 is the big day to wrap up the first season since leading gaming firm SportPesa returned as the main backer of Kenya’s top-flight league, and the campaign ends with Gor Mahia’s coronation at Nyayo National Stadium.

Heading into Round 34 of 34, Gor Mahia had already been confirmed champions after their title rivals, AFC Leopards, suffered defeat to APS Bomet in Round 33. At the time, K’Ogalo still had a game in hand, making the outcome of the title race academic.

With 68 points before even facing Mara Sugar in their penultimate fixture during the week, Gor Mahia had already wrapped up the championship, sitting four points clear of second-placed Ingwe, who were on 64 points.

Gor Mahia’s grand coronation caps off SportPesa League’s debut comeback season

On Sunday, in what’s expected to be a jam-packed Nyayo National Stadium, Gor Mahia will be crowned SportPesa League champions for a record-extending 22nd time, a milestone unmatched by any other club in the country.

The triumph also secures their return to Africa’s biggest club competition, the CAF Champions League and 15 million awaiting them for winning the championship.

Before the celebrations, they will face Nairobi United and will be keen to conclude the season with a convincing victory against a side that denied them silverware last season by beating them in the FKF Cup.

“We just have to focus, win, and do well. Not just win, but perform well because, of course, our fans will come in numbers. We want to present ourselves in a manner that shows we deserve to win the championship and that we have done well throughout the league,” Akonnor said ahead of his final match of the season.

The Ghanaian tactician is set to finish his debut campaign in charge with the league title already secured.

Akonnor also reflected on their goalless draw against Mara Sugar on Wednesday.

“We needed to do more than we did,” Akonnor said. “I wasn’t too happy with how we played, the chances we created, and how we also gave away a lot of opportunities at the back. We were not properly organized. But in all fairness, it is okay. We are going back to Nairobi, and we want to finish strongly in our next match.”

For Nairobi United, the focus will be on ending their debut season on a positive note and returning to winning ways after a run of three consecutive matches without victory, comprising two draws and one defeat.

While a top-three finish is out of reach, a top-four finish remains attainable for the newcomers, who currently sit fifth on 50 points.

The two sides have met only twice in their history, including once in the SportPesa League, with the first-leg encounter ending in a 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, all nine SportPesa League Round 34 fixtures will be played on Sunday. The relegation battle has largely been settled, with Bidco United and Sofapaka already relegated to the National Super League.

Kariobangi Sharks, however, are still uncertain about their fate regarding the relegation-promotion playoff spot.

They will need to put up a remarkable fight and defeat Sofapaka in their final match. In addition to winning, they would require a huge swing in goal difference to catch Mathare United and Ulinzi Stars, who are three points ahead and boast a superior goal difference.

Their hopes depend not only on a heavy victory but also on favourable results elsewhere. Should the margins fail to go their way, they could find themselves battling for survival in the coming days, either through the playoff or direct relegation.

AFC Leopards will face already-relegated Bidco United as they seek to end the season on a positive note. Reaching 67 points would at least provide some consolation at the Ulinzi Sports Complex after seeing the title slip away in the closing stages of the campaign.

The battle for a top-three finish will also command attention. Kenya Police FC will aim to overcome Kakamega Homeboyz and cement their place on the podium. However, a defeat could open the door for Shabana FC, who would leapfrog them into third place if they overcome KCB FC.
