  • Despite being only in their second week of pre-season training following a sluggish start, the players’ discipline and high fitness levels exceeded expectations.

Kenyan giants Gor Mahia launched a stunning assault on the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup on Friday night, dismantling Rwandan champions APR FC 5-0 at a packed Amahoro Stadium.

The victory witnessed by thousands of local fans and tournament patron President Paul Kagame, served as a masterclass for Gor after a slow start to pre season.

Following the match, K’Ogalo head coach Charles Akonnor opened up about the tactical blueprint that dismantled the hosts on their own turf.

Coming off defensive vulnerability and a defeat in their initial pre-season outing, Akonnor and his technical bench spent the build-up to the tournament opener identifying structural flaws in the Rwandan side.

“We saw a bit of a few matches our opponents had played, and we realized what we could do to outplay them,” Akonnor revealed.

“We saw their strengths and their weaknesses, and we used it all to our advantage. Their weakness was transition, when they came forward and lost possession, they were not really organized.”

Instead of engaging in an open battle away from home, Akonnor instructed his squad to set a tactical trap. Gor Mahia dropped into a disciplined, compact shape, inviting APR forward before striking.

“Most of the time, we waited and set the opponent up. Then, when we gained possession, we were quick to attack. We knew that if we were solid at the back and defensively good, there would always be a chance for us to attack and move forward.”

The strategy paid dividends seamlessly. After absorbing early pressure, Michael Kibwage opened the floodgates in the 34th minute, nodding home a corner.

Just a minute later, Patrick Essombe doubled the advantage with a spectacular long-range strike that left the hosts chasing shadows.

Second-half goals from Paul Okoth Odhiambo, Lesley Otieno Owino, and Ebenezer Assifuah-Inkoom completed the 5-0 rout.

Central to executing this high-intensity counter-pressing system was a completely revamped midfield structure.

The coach also explained his proactive management during the match, such as withdrawing midfielder Alpha Onyango to protect the team balance.

“Alpha did very well. We brought him off because he had a yellow card, which was not too good; if he had gone back in and made a mistake, it was going to affect us. However, I think our midfield structure was really good. They played exactly how we wanted them to play, and the composure with which they composed themselves on the field of play was excellent.”

While the team is only in its second week of pre-season training, Akonnor admitted that the fitness levels of his players exceeded his initial expectations, though he warned that the SportPesa League champions are still far from their peak.

“Their discipline exceeded our expectations regarding the exercises we gave them and how they had to train. They came in much fitter than we expected. But to be honest, we are not yet at our peak level.”

With three points and a massive +5 goal difference, Gor Mahia firmly sits at the summit of Group A and on course to qualifying for the Semifinal.
