The Menengai Oilers kicked off their defense of the Impala Floodlit 2025 Cup on a high note, dispatching KCB 16-13 on Saturday night at the RFUEA grounds in the main cup quarterfinals.
The Oilers approached this clash determined to secure victory – a mission they accomplished, having won the title for the first time last season by defeating Impala RFC in the finals.

KCB, ten-time champions of this tournament, were aiming to advance to the semifinals after missing out last season, where they were eliminated in the same quarterfinal stage by KU Blak Blad.
Unfortunately for them, history repeated itself, leaving the Ruaraka-based club with a familiar, painful exit.
The match began cautiously, with both sides slotting a penalty each, Timothy Omela converting for Oilers before the Bankers responded in kind.

William Opaka then ignited the Bankers, giving them the lead with a well-executed try. The Oilers managed to narrow the gap with another converted penalty before halftime.
In a game riddled with backline errors, KCB extended their advantage with a second penalty, making it 13-6 in the second half.

However, momentum swung back towards the reigning champions, who seized an opportunity to level the scores with a brilliantly converted try for 13-13 scores.
In the dying minutes, it was Gibson Weru’s charges who ultimately won a crucial penalty. Abutwalib Wesonga made no mistake, successfully slotting the kick to send his team through to the semifinals.
With this win, the Menengai Oilers – who also defeated KCB in last year’s Kenya Cup semifinals, have now set up a date with KU Blak Blad who took a a commanding 35-13 victory over Kenya Harlequins.
