The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has reappointed the experienced Eric Ogweno to the position of team manager for the men’s national rugby 7s side, Shujaa, ahead of the promotion-chasing 2026 campaign.

Ogweno replaces Steve Sewe and returns to the position he held before Sewe’s appointment in August 2023.

During his initial stint, Ogweno served as the Kenya 7s team manager from 2017 to 2023 after being promoted from assistant team manager.

Ogweno returns as Kenya 7 Team Manager

Speaking on his appointment, Ogweno expressed his delight as he outlined a deep desire to help the team achieve promotion to the newly introduced SVNS Division 1.

“I am glad to be back and reconnect with the boys. The importance of the forthcoming season is not lost on me.

I have had a long, excellent and productive working relationship with coach Wambua, Kisia, Lamech, Andrew and my assistant TM Morgan. I am certain to give the team and the union the administration support required to break into the SVNS Tier 1,” he told SportPesa Blog.

Kenya 7s coach welcomes Ogweno’s reappointment

Shujaa head coach Kevin Wambua also welcomed the return of Ogweno, who he says will add experience to the team.

“Ogweno brings a lot of balance to the team. He is a hands-on guy who knows how to work with the players, especially off the pitch. Having him around with all that experience he brings will definitely help us,” Wambua said.

Ogweno first stepped into the team managerial role with Blak Bad RFC between 2012 to 2014. He then served as the Super Series Universities Franchise team manager from 2014 to 2015.

He joined the national team as assistant team manager in 2016 before being promoted to team manager in 2017, a position he held till 2023.
