Alpha Onyango to the rescue again as Gor Mahia force a draw against bogey side Nairobi United

Alpha Onyango Gor Mahia

Alpha Onyango scored a sensational 88th-minute equaliser to rescue a point for Gor Mahia in a dramatic 1-1 draw against Nairobi United at Wang’uru Stadium on Sunday in the SportPesa League 2026/27.

The midfielder capitalised on a costly goalkeeping error by Nairobi United goalkeeper Bernard Jairo, who threw the ball straight into his path before Onyango made no mistake, unleashing a spectacular effort that flew into the back of the net.

The late intervention denied Nairobi United what would have been their first league victory of the season and extended Gor Mahia’s difficult run following consecutive defeats.

Nairobi United had looked on course for a memorable victory after Joseph Seremba gave them the lead shortly after the quarter-hour mark, finishing off a swift counterattacking move initiated by Ovella Ochieng’.

The Naibois had gone into the encounter still searching for their first league victory after collecting four points from their opening five matches, recording four draws and one defeat.

Seremba’s goal came after Bernard Ouma won possession from a Gor Mahia throw-in and released Ovella, who beat his marker Shariff Musa before carrying the ball forward and setting up the Ugandan forward to slot past Byrne Omondi.

Nairobi United carried their advantage into the interval and continued to threaten after the restart, with Mark Kithome coming close to doubling their lead after a cross by Wangaya was spilled into his path. However, his close-range effort was blocked by Frank Odhiambo.

Gor Mahia responded through substitute Ebenezer Assifuah, whose header from a Shariff Musa delivery narrowly missed the target.

Alpha also came close to finding the equaliser earlier in the second half, driving forward before unleashing a powerful effort from 24 yards that crashed against the woodwork.

The midfielder threatened again from a free-kick before finally producing the decisive moment in the 88th minute, punishing Jairo’s costly mistake with a stunning finish to restore parity.

The draw means Nairobi United remain unbeaten against Gor Mahia in competitive football, having now recorded two victories and two draws in their four meetings.

For Gor Mahia, Onyango’s late intervention ensures they avoid a third consecutive league defeat after losing to KCB FC and subsequently falling behind against Nairobi United.

For Patrick Aussems’ men, the result will be a bitter disappointment after coming within minutes of securing their first league victory of the campaign, while Gor Mahia will take encouragement from their late comeback despite dropping further points in the title race.
