Embu 7s
  • Strathmore Leos defeated KCB Rugby 31-21 to win the Embu 7s on Sunday, August 24, at the ASK Njukiri Showground.
  • The victory marked Leos’ second title in the 2025 SportPesa National 7s Circuit, having already clinched the Prinsloo 7s.
  • There are now two remaining legs in the SportPesa National 7s Circuit: The Kabeberi 7s in Meru (September) and the Dala 7s, also set for September.

Strathmore Leos’ standout player Barnabas Owuor, recently named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the Embu 7s, has affirmed that his team is back to the drawing board, determined to capture the overall 2025 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit title.

This comes after the Leos triumphed in the fourth leg of the series on Sunday at ASK Njukiri Showgrounds in Embu county.

The Leos, who secured the Embu 7s crown for the fourth consecutive year, but for the first time within the Kenya Rugby 7s calendar, outclassed circuit leaders KCB with a 31-21 victory in the final.

This win draws the two teams level with two titles apiece after four legs; the Leos have triumphed at the Prinsloo and Embu 7s, while KCB claimed the Driftwood and Christie 7s.

Owuor was instrumental in the final, earning Player of the Match honors as his team accumulated 22 points, narrowly edging out the bankers’ 19.

KCB currently leads the log with 82 points, just two ahead of Strathmore’s 80, as the race intensifies with two rounds remaining: The Kabeberi 7s (September 6–7) and the Dala 7s (September 13–14).

Speaking to the SportPesa Blog post-match, a jubilant Owuor expressed his pride at claiming the Embu title for a fourth time, especially as this was its first inclusion in the national sevens circuit.

This is our fourth title here at Embu in a row, but it’s truly special because it’s now officially part of the Kenya 7s circuit. Every top team was present, so it was not an easy tournament. The effort from day one was immense,” Owuor remarked.

He emphasized the importance of the win in the title race and hinted at their renewed focus as they prepare for the final two legs.

KCB is ahead of us by the slimmest of margins. With two legs remaining, we are reassessing our strategy. I hope we can reach a point where each team is winning their games. Whatever unfolds will happen because we have our objectives, and they have theirs.

The pressure is undoubtedly mounting, but I’m thrilled with this hard-fought victory. The entire squad performed exceptionally; this was not just for me but for the whole team and the incredible support we received from our family and fans we don’t take it for granted.

We are also immensely grateful for the effort of our coach, Willis Ojal, and the technical staff,” he added.

Strathmore Leos and KCB have clashed in three finals this season. Leos have emerged victorious twice, while KCB claimed their only win in the Driftwood 7s held in Mombasa.

Aside from Owuor’s MVP accolade, his teammate Victor Mola continued his stellar form, securing the Top Try Scorer award for the third consecutive tournament, scoring eight tries, tied with David Nyangige of Impala RFC.

In Division Two, Obed Aberi was crowned Player of the Final, while David Kimani of Jackals clinched both Top Try Scorer and Top Points Scorer, with eight tries and 40 points respectively.
