Kenya’s national women’s volleyball team, the Malkia Strikers, are fine-tuning their training as they prepare to clash with North African giants Algeria in their quarter-final matchup at the 2026 CAVB Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship.
Playing before a passionate home crowd at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi, the record continental champions are chasing a record-extending 11th title as they seek to build on their last African championship victory achieved in 2023 in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
The Geoffrey Omondi coached squad stormed into the last eight without dropping a single set throughout the tournament. After making quick work of their group rivals Mali (25-14, 25-11, 25-12) and Zambia (25-10, 25-13, 25-15).
Coach Omondi’s side delivered a masterclass performance in the Round of 16 by sweeping Nigeria in straight sets (25-15, 25-18, 25-12).
Algeria on the other hand earned their quarter-final ticket after a convincing 3-0 victory (25-11, 25-15, 25-4) over Mali in their Round of 16 knockout fixture.

In senior national team history, Kenya has consistently outmatched Algeria recording seven wins and 22 total sets won to Algeria’s single victory and six sets won across eight total matches played.
Their most iconic meeting came in the 2015 African Championship Final in Nairobi, where Kenya swept Algeria 3-0 to secure their last senior continental crown on home soil.
The last meeting between the two sides in the senior CAVB Women’s African Nations Championship took place in 2019 in Cairo, Egypt, where the Malkia Strikers cruised past Algeria in a straight-sets 3-0 preliminary group stage victory.
If the Malkia Strikers defeat Algeria, they will advance to face the winner of the quarter-final match between perennial rivals Cameroon and neighbors Uganda, setting up a potential semi-final clash against Cameroon.
Should Kenya prevail in their semi-final, they will play for the continental trophy and a direct qualification ticket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Their final opponent would emerge from the opposite side of the bracket, which features Egypt, Tunisia, Rwanda, and Ghana in the remaining quarter-final fixtures.
