According to the talented runner, he is still working on a few things ahead of the biggest event of the season.
“My training right now is at 80%, so I will be upping the training in the next few weeks and over the next races before Tokyo,” he commented.
Wanyonyi added that his primary goal is to qualify to the 800m final in the championships that will take place between September 13 and September 21.
“I need to get to the finals; then I think I can take any medal,” stated the runner who trains in the 2 Running Club in Kapsabet.

Wanyonyi, who won an 800m gold medal for Kenya at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, is one of the clear favorites to triumph in Tokyo.
However, that will not be easy since he is expected to come up against a strong field that will have the likes of the reigning world champion Marco Arop of Canada and Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati.

Nonetheless, his performances in recent Diamond League meetings including Monaco and London, will increase his confidence ahead of the showdown.
Wanyonyi won the London Diamond League title in a meeting record time of 1:42.00, overcoming a late charge from Arop.

He revealed during the post-race interview the tactic he used to deliver the impressive victory.
“I am feeling so happy to win today! The race was so good for me. Yeah, if you came to the race, it was very competitive. I felt in my mind that this race was very competitive, so I needed to run my best to win.
So, if I ran 600m and then Arop came and passed me in the last 200m, I said, ‘Okay, let’s go!’ because this 200m for me is too long,” explained Wanyonyi.
