- Emmanuel Wanyonyi won the men’s 800m race at the London Diamond League 2025 in a meeting record time of 1:42.00.
- Wanyonyi was followed by Marco Arop of Canada and Great Britain’s Max Burgin.
- After the successful London Diamond League outing, Wanyonyi is expected to fly to Nairobi and take part in the Kenyan trials for the Tokyo World Athletics Championships 2025.
Kenyan sensation Emmanuel Wanyonyi claimed his first ever victory at the London Diamond League 2025 on Saturday, July 19.
Wanyonyi, who was making his London Diamond League debut, overpowered a strong field that has the likes of Marco Arop and Bryce Hoppel.
Just like he did at the recently held Monaco Diamond League, Wanyonyi ran a tactical race that saw him broke away from his opponents with about 400m remaining to the end of race.

Although Arop outpaced Wanyonyi with about 300m to go, the Kenyan switched on the gears and went on to have the last laugh.
Wanyonyi, who is seeking to win the 800m title at the upcoming Tokyo World Athletics 2025, crossed the finishing line in a meeting record time of 1:42.00.
The time that the Kapsabet based runner achieved in London Diamond League, is among the third fastest this year, with all of them belong to him.

He was followed by Arop and Great Britain runner Burgin, who clocked 1:42.22 and 1:42.36 in that order.
Meanwhile, the fourth, fifth and sixth positions went to Hoppel, Mohamed Attaoui and Donavan Brazier.
Hoppel crossed the finishing line at 1:42.71 while Attaoui and Brazier registered times of 1:43.01 and 1:43.08 respectively.

The win will improve Wanyonyi’s confident in the build up to the eagerly world championships where he will be looking to secure a gold medal for his motherland.
Up next for the electric Wanyonyi is the Athletics Kenya (AK) national trials for the Tokyo world championships that is scheduled to go down on Tuesday, July 22 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
Besides Wanyonyi, some of the other runners who are expected to compete in that trials are Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet, Agnes Ngetich and Ferdinand Omanyala.
