Wearing the captain’s armband for a single top-flight club is an honor most players chase for an entire career. For Gor Mahia defender Mike Kibwage, however, leading from the front has become second nature.
The commanding centre-back holds one of the most unique records in the SportPesa League, having captained or worn the armband for four of Kenya’s biggest football clubs, KCB FC, Sofapaka FC, Tusker FC, and now record champions Gor Mahia, where he serves as the first assistant captain.
Speaking during the pre-match briefing on Sunday afternoon at Kigali Pele stadium ahead of K’Ogalo’s clash against Ugandan heavyweights Vipers SC, Kibwage remained remarkably grounded, opening up about his extensive leadership resume and crediting it to the unique trust placed in him by veterans and coaches alike.

Reflecting on his journey, which has also seen him skipper the Kenya U-23 national team and Harambee Stars in the 2024 CHAN tournament matches, the 28-year-old explained that true leadership is something spotted by those who know the game best.
“I am happy for the role, first of all. Sometimes I think about it and wonder if it’s inborn,” Kibwage revealed.
“In leadership, there are skills that your seniors can see in you. You can have many players in a team, but there are specific qualities the technical bench looks for. Having been a leader in my previous teams and even at the national level, it gives you an advantage and priority whenever you go somewhere new.”
This innate ability to bridge the gap between youth prospects and seasoned veterans is precisely why Gor Mahia moved quickly to draft him straight into their primary leadership structure ahead of the new campaign alongside Sylvester Owino and Alpha Onyango.

Kibwage’s maturity was on full display when discussing the team’s mindset. While Gor Mahia is fresh off a convincing victory in their previous outing against APR,the defender made it clear that laxity has no place in their dressing room.
“We are very happy about our previous game, which we won convincingly, but you are always as good as your next game,” Kibwage warned. “For us, we have put that aside because we know why we are here.”
Kibwage views the current tournament as the perfect test for forging the squad chemistry, especially with several new faces arriving at the club.
“This tournament is a way of bringing us together,” he noted.
“We have new players in the team, and such moments will really help us bond well ahead of the CAF games that are ahead of us. We are ready for tomorrow’s game, and we are going to approach it with the same seriousness as the previous one.”
Stepping up in the absence of injured club captain Sylvester Owino, Kibwage proudly wore the armband and led the team to a 5-0 victory over Rwandan giants APR FC.
He did so in spectacular fashion, leading by example by scoring the opening goal of the match at Amahoro Stadium.
