General Service Unit (GSU), staged a comeback from two sets down to defeat Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) 3-2 and clinch the men’s inaugural Volleyball Kenya Cup title at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani indoor arena, in Nairobi on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

KDF took the early advantage, securing the first two sets 25-22 and 26-24.

However, the National League champions, responded with resilience, narrowly taking the third set 26-24 and completely outclassing their opponents in the fourth set 25-17 to force a decider.

GSU maintained their momentum in the final set, winning 15-12, a victory that saw them complete a season double barely a month after reclaiming the National League title.

In the men’s third-place play-off, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) bounced back from their semi-final loss to KDF by overpowering Kenya Prisons 3-1 (27-25, 25-16, 36-38, 25-19) to secure the bronze medal.

Prisons once again settled for fourth place, mirroring their finish in the National League play-offs.

KCB Women’s Volleyball Team champions of the inaugural women’s Kenya Cup

Meanwhile, in the women’s category, KCB Women’s Volleyball Team were crowned champions of the inaugural Kenya Cup after stunning National League winners Kenya Pipeline 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-22) at the same venue.

It was a sweet redemption for the bankers, who had succumbed to the Oilers 3-1 during the National League play-off semi-final in Mombasa in May.

The third-place match saw Kenya Prisons convincingly defeated the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-19), securing the final podium spot.

The victory was particularly satisfying for Prisons, who had fallen to DCI 3-2 in the semi-finals of the National League play-offs last May. DCI settled for fourth place.

In the mens individual awards, Simion Kipkorir, who played a pivotal role in GSU’s championship victory, was named Most Valuable Player.

His teammate, Brian Melly, was recognized as the Best Setter, while Hudson Kipchumba took home the Best Libero accolade.

On the women’s side, KCB dominated the individual honors.

Terry Tata was crowned Most Valuable Player, Esther Mutinda won Best Setter, and Belinda Barasa was recognized as Best Middle Blocker. Juliana Namutira was also celebrated as Best Outside Hitter.

2025 Kenya Cup volleyball prize money

According to the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), the Kenya Cup champions (men and women) each received Ksh 300,000, while the runners-up and third-place teams were awarded Ksh 200,000 and Ksh 100,000, respectively.
