Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia receive a boost as forward Patrick Esombe returns to availability following a short injury stint. However, K’Ogalo will be without long-term absentee Samuel Kapen, who remains sidelined with an ACL injury.

Captain Sylvester Owino is also expected to miss out as he continues light training following a calf strain. New defensive midfielder Ebenezer Ocran and marquee striker signing Paul Okoth could both be handed competitive debuts.

Julien Mette will be forced to shuffle his attacking options as star striker Erick Kapaito misses out while recovering from a knee injury.

Defender Thomas Teka and midfielder Warsama Hassan also remain unavailable as they continue their respective rehabilitation programs.

What was said before the game?

Charles Akonnor (Gor Mahia)

The Ghanaian tactician underlined the importance of using high-intensity pre-season fixtures including their recent run to the CECAFA Kagame Cup final to condition his squad for the demands ahead.

“I am very delighted that the CECAFA Kagame Cup and Super Cup comes at such a time because it will give the team good preparations ahead of the new season,” Akonnor stated. “We have faced quality teams that have given us a good edge in our preparations. Everything is possible, but we must stay serious in training and do the right thing.”

Julien Mette (Tusker FC)

The Brewers’ head coach welcomed the challenge against the league champions as a benchmark for his overhauled squad.

“We have done a preparation that is quite interesting so far. Playing the CECAFA tournament was a very good thing because we faced top teams that prepared us,” Mette noted. “We need to build a stronger and deeper squad if we want to compete. We want to use these big matches to understand where we are and what we still need to improve.”

Gor Mahia vs Tusker H2H

The head-to-head record in Super Cup history heavily favors drama, with four of their five curtain-raiser meetings ending in penalty shootouts.

While Gor Mahia hold seven Super Cup titles overall to Tusker’s three, the Brewers have held the upper hand in spot-kicks, winning shootouts against K’Ogalo in 2012, 2014, and 2021.

Gor Mahia’s lone outright Super Cup victory over Tusker came in 2017 via a 1-0 win, alongside a shootout triumph in 2013.

All eyes turn to Nyayo Stadium this afternoon to see if Tusker will clinch their second piece of domestic silverware in a few months time under Julien Mette, which would hand Gor Mahia back-to-back final defeats following their CECAFA loss in Kigali.

Conversely, if Gor Mahia emerge victorious, Charles Akonnor’s side will break that brief finals slump and extend their record tally as Kenya’s undisputed Super Cup kings.
