Gor Mahia’s latest acquisition, defender Michael Kibwage, has outlined the key reasons behind his decision to join the record Kenyan champions instead of extending his stay with Tusker FC.

Kibwage is among several fresh signings brought in by Gor Mahia as they gear up for the new season, aiming to reclaim the FKF Premier League title.

The 27-year-old penned a two-year contract with the club after spending two solid seasons at Tusker, where he was a consistent figure in their defensive line.

Michael Kibwage on the difficult decision to leave Tusker FC

Speaking to the club’s media team, Kibwage admitted that the decision to switch clubs wasn’t straightforward, but emphasized his desire to elevate his career and find a new environment for professional growth.

It was not an easy decision to make, but I had to stay bold. From a career perspective, progress is necessary. I have played for several teams, and the ultimate ambition has always been to win the league,” Kibwage said.

Joining Gor Mahia is a significant step in my journey because I felt the need for a fresh environment, one that matches my ambition and drive.

I believe this is a team with a championship mentality, and here, I see the potential to achieve even greater things.”

Kibwage unveils his main reasons for signing with Gor Mahia

Kibwage revealed that one of the major motivations behind his move was the club’s immense fanbase, whose passionate support and high expectations were something he had always aspired to experience.

Gor Mahia’s incredible support base was a huge attraction. I’ve always wanted to play in front of packed stadiums. That kind of atmosphere brings pressure and pressure drives performance.

I believe stepping into this kind of environment will push me beyond my comfort zone and help me grow,” he explained.

A new chapter for a national team stalwart

The 27-year-old center-back, who impressed while representing the national team Harambee Stars during the African Nations Championship (CHAN), where Kenya reached their first-ever quarterfinal, believes that playing for a club of Gor Mahia’s stature will help him maintain and improve his international form.

“I’m also committed to keeping my place in the national team. Competing in a high-pressure setting like the FKF Premier League prepares you for the challenges at international level, where expectations are even higher,” Kibwage added.

Kibwage joined Tusker in 2023 and made numerous appearances over two seasons.

He was instrumental in their 2024/25 campaign, helping the team secure a fourth-place finish in the FKF Premier League with 57 points, just eight behind champions Kenya Police FC.
