Defending SportPesa League champions Gor Mahia FC have officially ushered in a new leadership era, announcing towering center-back Sylvester Owino as the club’s new captain.
The transition follows the retirement of long-serving skipper Philemon Otieno, who spent over a decade anchoring the K’Ogalo defense.
The club’s management and head coach Charles Akonnor jointly engineered a seamless passing of the armband to Owino on the pitch while keeping Otieno at the heart of the club as the newly appointed Team Manager.
Otieno is joined in the backroom staff by fellow retiring veteran Ernest Wendo, who steps in as a Technical Assistant.

Owino, who arrived at the club in October 2022 from Kakamega Homeboyz, has rapidly grown into a dependable team player.
He boasts an impressive three league titles during his brief stint at the club winning his first two under former coach Jonathan McKinstry in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons before anchoring the backline alongside Mike Kibwage and Frank Odhiambo for Akonnor to lift the 22nd title in the recently concluded 2025/26 campaign.

The former Kakamega Homeboyz man will be assisted by defenders Mike Kibwage and midfielder Alpha Onyango, both of whom have been formally named as first and second vice-captain respectively.
Should the primary leadership trio be unavailable due to suspension, injury, or squad rotation, the team will look to the immense experience of midfielder Lawrence Juma and forward Ebenezer Assifuah, who have both been designated to step up and lead the squad as reserve captains.
Owino’s first outing with the armband proved to be a stern test. Leading K’Ogalo out at the Kigali Pelé Stadium for the Rayon Day international friendly, Gor Mahia suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Rwandan giants Rayon Sports.
Owino will now look to revitalise the squad ahead of the Cecafa tournament where they face hosts APR , Djibouti champions Garde Republican and Vipers from Uganda.
