Reigning Sportpesa League champions Gor Mahia face a daunting test in their quest for regional supremacy after being drawn into a demanding Group A for the upcoming 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup.
The official draw ceremony, conducted at the Amahoro National Stadium press conference room in Kigali, pitted Kenya’s most decorated club against some of the most formidable powerhouses in East and Central African football.
The 2026 tournament marks a return for K’Ogalo, who are seeking to replicate the regional dominance that saw them lift three CECAFA Club Championship titles in 1980, 1981, and 1985.

Gor Mahia’s return to the regional stage sees them placed alongside tournament hosts APR FC of Rwanda and Ugandan giants Vipers SC, while Djibouti’s FC Garde Républicaine completes the four-team pool.
The group presents an immediate challenge for the record Kenyan champions who have experienced a lengthy title drought since their last regional triumph over rivals AFC Leopards in Khartoum 41 years ago.
During their last notable charge into the competition back in 2015, K’Ogalo fell just one step short of glory, enduring a painful 2–0 defeat to Tanzania’s Azam FC in the final.
The rest of the tournament draw has thrown up equally fascinating storylines across the three groups of four teams.

In Group B, defending champions Singida Black Stars of Tanzania have been pooled directly against six-time tournament winners Simba SC, setting up an all-Tanzanian clash alongside South Sudan’s Jamus SC and Somalia’s Mogadishu City.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s second representative, Tusker FC,who were late inclusions in the tournament after Sudan’s Al Merreikh withdrew headline Group C, where the Brewers will trade blows with Sudanese powerhouses Al Hilal, Rwandan giants Rayon Sports, and Zanzibar’s KVZ SC.
According to CECAFA organizers, only the top team from each group and the single best overall runner-up across all three pools will progress directly to the semi-final stage with matches split across Kigali’s venues, including the newly modernized Amahoro National Stadium and the Kigali Pelé Stadium from July 24 to August 7.
