Gor Mahia’s title charge has been hit by a significant injury setback following confirmation that Harambee Stars defender Sylvester Owino will be out of action for at least six weeks.
The center-back underwent an MRI assessment on Monday morning, which revealed a partial tear of the lower medial gastrocnemius muscle belly.

Gor Mahia’s key defender Sylvester Owino sidelined for at least six week
Team Doctor Brian Odongo confirmed that scans revealed a muscle tear.
“He was referred for further evaluation where an MRI confirmed a partial tear of the lower medial gastrocnemius muscle belly. He is expected to be out for six weeks before returning to play subject to his recovery progress,” Odongo added.
Owino, who has been a pillar of the league-best defense this season, signaled to the bench in the 35th minute after feeling sharp discomfort in his calf.
He was immediately replaced by Mike Kibwage, who performed admirably to see out the win. Medical experts suggest a Grade 2 tear of the gastrocnemius, the larger of the two calf muscles, typically requires a month and a half of rehabilitation to ensure the muscle fibers heal correctly.
Rushing the recovery could lead to a full rupture, which would likely end his season entirely.
The former Kakamega Homeboyz defender has been a mainstay in the Kogalo defense this season, initially partnering Mike Kibwage in the opening half of the season before forming a partnership alongside mid season signing Frank Odhiambo.
With Owino sidelined, the spotlight shifts to Mike Kibwage and Frank Odhiambo.

The duo is expected to form the central defensive partnership as the league leaders look to protect their double-digit lead.
While the news is a blow to the squad, it comes at a time when Gor Mahia has established a dominant lead at the summit of the SportPesa League.
The win over the Soldiers, combined with AFC Leopards’ recent 4-1 collapse against Mathare United, has left Gor Mahia 10 points clear with 53 points.
However, the timing is particularly poor for the national team. Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy had just named Owino in the 23-man squad for the upcoming FIFA Series in Kigali, Rwanda, scheduled for March 23–31. The defender will now withdraw from the international camp to begin his recovery in Nairobi.
Owino is expected to be out for several high profile clashes including Shabana,Tusker, Bandari and Kariobangi Sharks.
