Germany forward Kai Havertz has issued an emotional apology to Die Mannschaft fans following his country’s shock elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting the players have fallen well short of the standards expected of one of football’s traditional powerhouses.
Germany’s World Cup journey came to a painful end after a dramatic Round of 32 defeat to Paraguay. The four-time world champions fought back from a goal down during normal time before eventually losing in a penalty shootout, extending a disappointing run in major international tournaments.
Paraguay struck first through Julio Enciso, whose well-taken goal handed the South Americans an early advantage and put Germany under immediate pressure.

The Germans responded through Havertz, with the Arsenal forward finding the back of the net to restore parity and force the contest into extra time after neither side could find a decisive winner.
However, the evening took another cruel twist for the 27-year-old during the penalty shootout. Havertz, who had kept Germany alive with his equaliser, saw his spot-kick saved as Paraguay held their nerve to secure a famous victory and progress to the Round of 16.

Speaking after the final whistle, the visibly dejected forward struggled to hide his disappointment as he apologised to Germany supporters.
“I’m speechless. It’s my second World Cup, and we’ve messed it up for the second time,” Havertz said.
“The last few tournaments have been a disaster. The only thing I can say is I’m sorry. We players need to take a long, hard look at ourselves. We’re representing a huge country with a rich football history, and our performances haven’t been good enough.”

The defeat marked another painful chapter for Germany, whose struggles on the international stage have continued despite returning to the knockout rounds for the first time since lifting the World Cup in 2014. After suffering group-stage eliminations at the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, there had been hope that this campaign would signal a fresh beginning.
Instead, Germany once again leave a major competition earlier than expected, raising fresh questions about the direction of the national team and its ability to compete with the world’s elite.
Havertz also appeared to reference Germany’s recent difficulties beyond the World Cup, with disappointing performances at the European Championship adding to growing concerns over the team’s inability to recapture the consistency and dominance that once defined them.
For the Arsenal attacker, the defeat was particularly difficult to accept. He produced a composed header to bring Germany back into the match but will inevitably remember the night for his missed penalty rather than his equaliser.
Despite the personal setback, Havertz accepted responsibility alongside his teammates, insisting the entire squad must reflect on their performances and find solutions before the next major tournament.
Germany’s latest World Cup disappointment leaves players, coaches and supporters searching for answers, while Paraguay celebrate one of the biggest victories in their football history.
For Havertz and his teammates, attention will now turn to rebuilding confidence and restoring the pride of a nation that expects to challenge for every major honour.
