Harambee Starlets ace Mwanahalima Jereko becomes second Kenyan into UEFA Women’s Champions League after Danish outfit clinch precious spot

Kenyan international and Harambee Starlets captain Mwanahalima Jereko has etched her name into the history books after helping Danish champions HB Køge qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase.

Jereko was named in the starting line-up as HB Køge secured their place in the next stage of the competition following a 1-1 draw against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night.

The result was enough for the Danish champions to progress 2-1 on aggregate having secured a crucial 1-0 victory away from home in the first leg.

For Jereko, the achievement represents another significant milestone in what has been an increasingly impressive start to life with Danish side having made the switch from Kansas City.

Her involvement also gives Kenya another reason to celebrate on the European stage with the Harambee Starlets captain now set to compete against some of the continent’s biggest clubs in the women’s game.

HB Køge went into the return leg with a slender advantage but showed enough composure to protect their lead despite a tense evening at home.

The Danish side had opportunities to make the second leg more comfortable before the break, with Kyra Carusa and Nadia Nadim both failing to convert promising chances. Their inability to put the tie beyond PSV meant the visitors remained within touching distance heading into the second half.

However, HB Køge needed less than a minute after the restart to find the breakthrough.

Cassandra Korhonen put the hosts ahead just 49 seconds into the second half after captain Mille Gejl picked out the Swedish forward with a well-weighted through ball. Korhonen kept her composure to finish the move and put HB Køge in control of the tie.

PSV would eventually find their equaliser in the 63rd minute after an error from HB Køge goalkeeper Alberte Vingum allowed a weak effort to slip through. The goal immediately changed the mood inside the stadium, with the Danish champions suddenly forced to defend their advantage under increasing pressure.

HB Køge survived the late scare, however, and held on for the result they needed.

Their qualification means the Danish champions will now compete in the 18-team UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase, where they will play six matches against some of Europe’s leading clubs. Only 12 teams will progress to the knockout stages.

The achievement is particularly significant for HB Køge, who are returning to the competition’s main stage for the second time. Their previous appearance came in 2021, when they lost all six of their group matches, conceding 22 goals while scoring only twice.

Four years later, the Danish side have another opportunity to test themselves among Europe’s elite, and Jereko will be part of that journey.

For Kenyan football, her qualification is equally important. Jereko becomes only the second Kenyan woman to reach the UEFA Women’s Champions League group/league phase, following in the footsteps of Majorlen Nekesa who featured for Sparta Prague in the competition in 2023.

The achievement further underlines the growing presence of Kenyan women’s footballers in top European competitions and provides Jereko with a huge platform ahead of the next chapter of the season.

As captain of Harambee Starlets, Jereko will also carry the experience of competing against Europe’s best back to the national team, where her leadership and exposure at the highest level could prove valuable.

For now, though, the focus will be on HB Køge and their historic return to Europe’s biggest women’s club competition. And for Jereko, the journey has already delivered a landmark moment one that places her among a select group of Kenyan women to have competed at the highest level of European club football.
