FIFA Intervenes in FKF provisional suspension of President Hussein Mohammed and two officials

World football governing body FIFA has demanded an urgent explanation from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) National Executive Committee (NEC) following a resolution to provisionally suspend the federation’s President and two other high-ranking officials.

In a letter dated April 26, 2026, FIFA revealed it has been made aware of a resolution passed on April 24, 2026, requiring FKF President Hussein Mohammed to step aside.

The resolution also targeted Mr Abdullahi Yusuf, a nominated member of the NEC, and Mr Dennis Gicheru, the Acting General Secretary.

FIFA, in coordination with CAF is currently assessing whether the move complied with the FKF Statutes, specifically Articles 38, 40, and 41. A primary focus of the investigation is whether the officials were granted their statutory right to be heard before the decision was made, a requirement under Article 41 paragraph 4.

The international governing body has expressed due seriousness regarding the attempt to adopt the resolution and is seeking clarification on several procedural matters, including:

How the meeting was convened and whether quorum and voting requirements were met, detailed written justifications for the suspensions, evidence that the President and his colleagues were afforded an opportunity to defend themselves.

FIFA’s Chief Member Associations Officer, Elkhan Mammadov, has directed the FKF NEC to provide comprehensive documentation to support their actions. This includes the meeting agenda, attendance records, voting results, and all reports used to justify the provisional dismissals.

The Federation has been given until May 1, 2026, to submit these materials to allow FIFA and CAF to complete their assessment of the situation.

The sudden ousting of Hussein Mohammed on April 24 has sent shockwaves through the Kenyan football community as Kenyan football legend McDonald Mariga was announced as the Acting President.

While the NEC moved swiftly to install the former Inter Milan midfielder to steady the ship, the legality of this transition remains under the intense scrutiny of FIFA.

The global body is currently verifying if the process used to sideline Mohammed and elevate Mariga followed the strict constitutional protocols of the federation, or if the move will be deemed a violation of statutory requirements.
