Harambee Stars prospect Zak Vyner Makes History as Bristol City Down Southampton

Harambee Stars prospect Zak Vyner etched his name into Bristol City’s history books as the Robins came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 in an entertaining English Championship encounter at Ashton Gate on Tuesday night.

Vyner, who has been one of City’s most consistent performers, became the club’s all-time record appearance holder in the Championship, making his 219th appearance surpassing the 218 set by Jamaican midfielder Marvin Elliott between 2007 and 2014.

The victory, City’s first home win in four games, capped a memorable evening for the defender and his teammates as they produced a spirited comeback to see off the Saints.

Southampton started strongly and took the lead in the 30th minute through captain Adam Armstrong, who latched onto a clever through ball from Shea Charles before calmly lifting it over goalkeeper Radek Vítek.

But their joy was short-lived as Anis Mehmeti equalized just three minutes later, slotting home his fifth goal of the season after a deflected pass from Rob Dickie fell kindly into his path.

After the break, Gerhard Struber’s men took control of proceedings. Vyner was at the heart of the turnaround, as his 57th-minute effort took a double deflection before finding Scott Twine, who reacted quickest to dink home from close range and give the hosts the lead.

Twine then made it 3-1 six minutes later, bursting forward from midfield and firing a low strike past Alex McCarthy to seal the win and lift City to fourth in the league standings.

The evening was also special for 17-year-old Leo Pecover, who made his senior debut for the Robins. The match ended with 24,019 fans in attendance, including over 3,000 traveling supporters from Southampton.

Vyner’s milestone comes as Bristol City move to secure his long-term future.
