Kenya vs Gambia
  • Kenya vs Gambia match ended in a 1-3 defeat for the Harambee Stars at home in the CAF 2026 World Cup Qualifier clash.
  • The encounter was held at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Friday, September 5.
  • Kenya will now prepare to face Seychelles on Tuesday, September 9, at the same venue.

Despite the euphoria from the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, the men’s national team, Harambee Stars, failed to carry that momentum into their CAF 2026 World Cup Qualifier, suffering a 1-3 defeat to Gambia on Friday evening.

The loss at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, effectively extinguished Kenya’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup, with three matches still remaining.

Just like in the first leg, which ended in a 3-3 draw in Ivory Coast, Musa Barrow and Yankuba Minteh once again found the back of the net for the Scorpions.

Sheriff Sinyan added a third, ensuring that substitute and clinical striker Ryan Ogam’s goal for Kenya was merely a consolation.

Moreover, this match marked Benni McCarthy’s third in charge of the full-strength senior team, and he is yet to secure a victory.

He began his tenure with a 3-3 draw against this same Gambian side, followed by a 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat to Gabon at Nyayo Stadium, and now this result.

Bright start for Harambee Stars as Scorpions seize the initiative

Kenya began the match with intensity, and by the third minute, they were already threatening Gambia’s goal.

Emmanuel Osoro delivered a superb cross from the left wing to William Lenkupae, whose strike narrowly missed the target, denying Kenya an early lead as they maintained early dominance.

However, the tide quickly turned when Gambia drew first blood. Sheriff Sinyan scored with a powerful header after a well-taken corner from Yankuba Minteh, giving the visitors the lead.

Kenya had a chance to respond minutes later, but failed to convert, while Minteh also squandered an opportunity to double Gambia’s advantage with a weak shot that was comfortably saved by Bryne Omondi.

Aboud Omar created another promising opportunity for Kenya with a precise volley into the box that met Michael Olunga’s head, but the captain’s effort lacked the pace to beat goalkeeper Baboucarr Gaye.

Five minutes before the half-hour mark, Gambia struck again through a swift counterattack. Minteh outpaced Kenya’s backline and slotted the ball past Omondi, courtesy of a clever assist from Barrow.

Shortly after, Gambia nearly extended their lead when Adama Sidibeh delivered an excellent cross to Barrow, who narrowly missed converting it into a third.

But Barrow wasn’t done yet.

He added Gambia’s third goal just before halftime, capitalizing on a defensive lapse and miscommunication between Silvester Owino and Richard Odada. Sidibeh pounced on the error and set up Barrow, who calmly slotted the ball past Omondi to complete a dominant first-half performance.

Kenya vs Gambia second half: Harambee Stars Dominate without reward, Ryan Ogam scores a consolation goal

The second half began with coach Benni McCarthy making tactical adjustments, introducing Alpha Onyango and Manzur Okwaro for Timothy Ouma and Richard Odada to inject fresh energy into the midfield.

Just like in the first half, the Harambee Stars started with great urgency, pressing high and creating several chances.

Ten minutes after the break, they thought they had pulled one back through Duke Abuya, but the goal was ruled out foe offside.

Kenya continued to dominate possession and applied constant pressure, but finishing let them down.

Substitute Ryan Ogam eventually scored in the 81st minute after coming off the bench, but the goal wasn’t enough to change the outcome.

Gambia held on to secure three crucial away points, moving above Kenya with seven points. Kenya, now in sixth place with six points, will prepare to face Seychelles on Tuesday, September 9, at the same venue with the World Cup dreams officially floored.
