Eight teams have booked their places in the East Division Elite 16 of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) in Nairobi from November 23–29, 2026.

The eight sides, representing eight different countries, will converge at the Kasarani Indoor Arena for the final stage of the Road to BAL 2027, with qualification for the continent’s premier men’s club basketball competition at stake.

The qualified teams are Nairobi City Thunder (Kenya), Dar City (Tanzania), Urunani BC (Burundi), NAM Blazers (Uganda), Ferroviario (Mozambique), Munali Suns (Zambia), Dolphins BC (Botswana) and Patriots BC (South Sudan).

The Elite 16 represents the final hurdle in the Road to BAL qualification campaign. The top two teams from the East Division will secure places in the 2027 BAL season, while the competition system also provides an opportunity for the best third-placed teams across the two divisions to qualify through a wildcard route.

The successful sides will join seven clubs that have already secured automatic qualification for the 2027 BAL season, completing the 12-team line-up.

For the hosts, Nairobi City Thunder, the tournament presents an opportunity to extend their remarkable rise in African basketball.

The Kenyan champions became the first club from the country to qualify for the BAL after winning the 2024 East Division Elite 16, defeating Uganda’s City Oilers 72–62 in the semi-finals before overcoming Cape Verde’s Kriol Star 99–86 in the final.

They subsequently secured back-to-back qualification by winning the 2025 East Division Elite 16, defeating Mozambique’s Ferroviario da Beira 109–70 in the semi-finals before beating South Africa’s Johannesburg Giants 94–84 in the final.

Thunder will now be targeting a third consecutive appearance in the BAL main competition, having earned a direct place in the Elite 16 following another unbeaten domestic campaign.

Under head coach Bradley Ibs, the side completed a three-peat in the Kenyan men’s top flight, extending their winning streak to 90 matches across three seasons after sweeping Kenya Ports Authority 3–0 in the playoff finals.

Their previous BAL campaigns have also provided valuable experience. After managing one victory in six matches during their maiden appearance, Thunder improved to two wins in five games in the 2026 season, including victories over Rwanda’s RSSB Tigers and South Africa’s Johannesburg Giants.

With all eight teams now confirmed, attention turns to Nairobi, where the East Division’s contenders will battle for their place in the 2027 BAL season.
