Record Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia have made a bold move by raiding the camp of their arch-rivals AFC Leopards, securing the high-profile transfer of their defender and assistant captain, Lewis Esambe Bandi, in preparation for the 2025/26 season.

On Tuesday, August 12, K’Ogalo officially announced the acquisition of Bandi from Ingwe on a two-year contract.

The highly rated defender is currently on international duty with the Harambee Stars in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and has impressed, particularly in a standout performance against Morocco.

We are pleased to announce the signing of Lewis Bandi on a two-year contract; defender Bandi is from AFC Leopards and currently in Harambee Stars’ CHAN squad. Welcome to Mahia Lewis,” the club posted on its official social media platforms.

Bandi’s transfer is considered one of the most notable moves of the window, not only because of his leadership role at Leopards but also due to the fierce rivalry between the two football giants.

His departure will be seen as a blow to AFC Leopards, while it significantly strengthens Gor Mahia’s backline as they look to reclaim the league title that slipped from their grasp last season.

Gor Mahia signs Mike Kibwage from Tusker FC

In addition, Gor Mahia also unveiled the signing of center-back Mike Kibwage from Tusker FC, also on a two-year deal. Kibwage’s contract with the Brewers had come to an end, paving the way for his switch to the record champions.

The dependable defender is also part of the current Harambee Stars CHAN squad and has already earned two caps.

His stellar performance, particularly after being introduced as a substitute against Angola and starting against Morocco, earned him the captain’s armband from head coach Benni McCarthy highlighting his growing leadership credentials.

Kibwage’s arrival is a massive boost for Gor Mahia as they aim for their 22nd league title, while Tusker FC will be left grappling with how to reinforce their squad after narrowly missing out on last season’s championship.
