When Faith Kipyegon won a 1500m gold medal for Kenya at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, she didn’t just attain her childhood dream; she started a chain of events that transformed her little-known village.

Kipyegon, who was on the verge of hitting her prime, produced a compelling display in the memorable race that saw her clinched the coveted title in a time of 4:08.92 and in the process became the first Kenyan woman to win the 1500m Olympic Games title.

The second and third positions went to Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia and Jennifer Simpson from the United States, who finished a few seconds behind Kipyegon. Dibaba clocked 4:10.27 while Simpson crossed the finishing line at 4:10.53.

For the people of Ndabibit Village, Kipyegon’s triumph in Rio helped them to get access to one of the most sought after services in many parts of Kenya; electricity.

According to Kipyegon, helping her community get access to electricity was something unprecedented.

“This is the Rio 2016 Olympics where I won this gold medal. My parents and my village area, like my community, got electricity through this medal.

Many people from my community benefited from winning one gold medal in Rio, and boom, electricity was there from the government. It was something special,” explained the 1500m world record holder.

Kipyegon further divulged that beating the likes of Dibaba to the coveted Olympic Games gold medal was not a walk in the park.

“So this is my Olympic gold medal from Paris, the 1500m, and this is my gold medal from Rio. This is my gold medal from Tokyo. All Olympic medals in one box. It was not easy. It has opened many doors for me since I won this medal,” she stated.
