  • Sofapaka thrashed Tusker FC 7-1 on Sunday, May 18, at Dandora Stadium, extinguishing the Brewers’ title hopes.

  • Gor Mahia FC were held to a 0-0 draw by Murang’a SEAL in a clash staged at the SportPesa Arena on Sunday.

Tusker FC suffered a devastating 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Sofapaka on Sunday, May 18, at Dandora Stadium – a result that brutally extinguished their fading hopes in the FKF Premier League title race.

Although the result left them in second place with 55 points, the Brewers – who had spent a significant portion of the season atop the standings – have now seen their quest for a 13th top-flight title come to an abrupt end.

The defeat handed title favorites Kenya Police a major advantage. The league leaders defeated FC Talanta 1-0 on the same day at Kenyatta Stadium, widening their lead to six points with only two matches left to play.

Gor Mahia, meanwhile, managed to reduce the gap to just one point after being held to a goalless draw by Murang’a SEAL at SportPesa Arena.

This leaves the title chase squarely between two contenders – Gor Mahia and Kenya Police.

The law enforcers need just one victory from their remaining two fixtures, either against Shabana or Gor Mahia, to seal the title with 64 points.

For Gor Mahia to retain their crown, they must triumph in all three of their final encounters-against Ulinzi Stars, AFC Leopards, and Kenya Police – to reach 63 points.

Their fate also hinges on Police slipping up, as even a single draw could level the points, leaving goal difference to decide the champion.

Why Tusker’s late surge won’t be enough

Even if Tusker triumphs in their final two fixtures – against Kariobangi Sharks and Kakamega Homeboyz – they would finish with 61 points, matching Kenya Police only if the leaders drop points in both remaining games.

However, Kenya Police enjoys a significant goal difference advantage of +15, a gap that is unlikely to be bridged by Tusker, who have been struggling for form.

Thus, while Coach Charles Okere insists the league isn’t over, Tusker’s path to the title appears virtually impassable this season.

For sure the league is not over but Tusker is a big team that needs players with character. We can’t be playing clueless football. We do all the preparations to defeat our opponents and then on the field some players aren’t giving their all.

If a player is tired of playing for the team, he can just leave because as a coach you do your job in training and then some players are fighting for the team while others are just coasting; that’s not acceptable,” Okere told Azam TV after the match.

With Gor Mahia set to clash directly with Kenya Police, Tusker will need to regroup and rebuild in the off-season, aiming to bounce back stronger and correct the flaws that have derailed their campaign.
