“K’Ogalo is an ordinary team!” Richard Omondi backs up last season’s bold words with match-winning goal against Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia vs KCB FC

KCB midfielder Richard Omondi has had the last laugh against Gor Mahia after scoring in the Bankers’ 2-1 victory over the defending champions backing up his bold remarks about K’Ogalo from last season.

The former Leeds United midfielder who was just returning from injury scored KCB’s second goal as the Bankers handed Gor Mahia their first defeat of the 2026/27 SportPesa League campaign at Moi Stadium in Embu.

The Bankers took the lead through Assis Mambote who finished off a Paul Kinyanjui assist before Omondi doubled their advantage following a defensive lapse by the record Kenyan champions. Alpha Onyango later reduced the deficit from the penalty spot but the Matano-coached side held on to claim all three points.

Speaking after the match, Omondi expressed his delight at finding the back of the net, particularly after recovering from injury. He also acknowledged that the encounter was never going to be an easy one, given Gor Mahia’s position in the league standings.

“I feel so great. We knew the game was not going to be that easy; it was going to be a difficult match. If you look at the table standings, Gor Mahia were ahead of us by five points, but at least we have reduced that gap,” he said.

The midfielder was particularly pleased to have made a difference on his return from the treatment room, revealing that beating Gor Mahia was part of KCB’s plan going into the fixture.

“In our preparations, we wanted to win against Gor Mahia and I feel so great to have come back from an injury and scored the winning goal for my team. I feel so good,” he added.

Omondi’s goal and post-match comments brought back memories of his bold statement ahead of last season’s meeting between the two sides, when he insisted that Gor Mahia’s reputation would not intimidate the Bankers.

At the time, the midfielder famously dismissed K’Ogalo’s name as something that should worry his teammates, insisting that the 22-time Kenyan champions would be treated like any other opponent.

“K’Ogalo is just a name. We will face them, and football will decide. The final whistle will be the decider. We will tackle them just like any other normal side. They are a good team, but we will approach the game the same way we did our previous opponents,” Omondi said before that encounter.

Gor Mahia eventually won that particular fixture 1-0, with Felix Oluoch scoring on his debut at Dandora Stadium but Omondi has now enjoyed a different outcome after helping KCB overcome the record champions.

His latest performance gave his earlier comments a new dimension with the midfielder not only standing by his words but also playing a decisive role in a result that ended Gor Mahia’s unbeaten start to the season.
