Assis Mambote targets more goals after scoring against Gor Mahia

KCB striker Assis Mambote is determined to score more goals this season after opening the scoring in the Bankers’ 2-1 victory over defending champions Gor Mahia at Moi Stadium in Embu.

The former Shabana FC forward was delighted to find the back of the net against Gor Mahia, describing it as a special moment given the stature of the opponents.

Speaking after the match, Mambote said he was particularly happy to score against a side that has dominated Kenyan football.

“I am very happy because it was a big game. You know Gor Mahia are always champions and playing against them is an honour. Scoring against them is a very big pleasure. We knew it was going to be a difficult game but we were ready for it and I am very happy to have scored against them,” he said.

Mambote has now scored twice in the league since joining KCB from Shabana during the off-season transfer window. His contribution has been important to the Bankers’ impressive start with the team currently sitting second in the SportPesa League standings.

The striker was also quick to praise his teammates, insisting that the squad must remain focused despite the important victory over Gor Mahia. KCB had to finish the match with ten men after Kenya U23 defender Baron Ochieng’ was sent off, making the three points even more valuable.

“We thank God for it. We keep pushing and we are taking it match by match. Today, we have to celebrate this win because it was hard-fought. You saw how we finished the game with one of our players getting a red card,” he said.

“We are going to celebrate, recover and focus on the next game because the journey is still long. I think I still have many goals to score.”

Mambote also spoke about his experience at KCB, admitting that joining a new club meant adjusting to a different football philosophy. However, he believes his willingness to follow the coach’s instructions has helped him settle in.

“It is a good experience because I am coming from a different team with a different philosophy. But I am a professional player, which means I have to adapt to my coach and follow his instructions,” he explained.

“I think today we played according to the coach’s instructions. We knew we were going to win this game, and we were ready for it. When you prepare well, stay focused and have the ability, I think God can also help you win. We did our best, and that is why we won, no matter how the game ended.”

The striker further revealed that remaining at Shabana was among the options he considered before eventually deciding to join KCB.

He credited the Kisii-based club for the good reception he received during his time there but felt a move to the Bankers offered the right opportunity to achieve his personal ambitions this season.

“I think it was one of the better options I had, especially from a sporting perspective. I had many options and staying at Shabana was also a possibility because it was a good team for me. They welcomed me well, and everything was okay there,” he said.

“However, considering the targets I wanted to achieve this season, I had to make a decision. I have an agent, a lawyer and many people around me who we discuss these things with and make decisions together. We felt the best option for me this season was to play for KCB and that is why I joined them.”

With two goals already to his name and KCB firmly in the early title conversation, Mambote will be hoping to maintain his scoring form as the Bankers continue their push in the SportPesa League.
