Kabras Sugar head coach Carlos Katywa//Kabras X

Kabras Sugar head coach Carlos Katywa has expressed his disappointment with his team’s performance, despite their impressive 43-22 victory over Kenya Harlequins at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi over the weekend.

In their pursuit of a fourth consecutive title, having won in 2022, 2023, and 2024, the Millers started this season strong, winning all eight of their matches so far and leading the standings with 40 points.

Additionally, the Western region-based club is targeting a third consecutive unbeaten season in the top flight.

Despite the win, Katywa is discontented with the team’s conversion rate. He explained that during round-robin games, they often make unnecessary attempts for points.

“I was very, very disappointed in our conversion rate. We spent close to about 10 minutes in our opposition’s 22, and we normally don’t come out with points. But I guess also it’s the fact that when we play round-robin games, we don’t go for points,”Katywa shared as per Pulse Sports.

He also highlighted how players sometimes forget how to capitalize on scoring opportunities, despite discussions on their mistakes during training.

“I have mixed emotions about this game in particular. We started like a house on fire. I’m starting to wonder whether our training regime might be the cause of complacency because I think we work on the areas of concern and then forget what we’ve done well in the previous game,” he remarked.

Katywa also noted concerns with Kabras’ set pieces, particularly at the breakdowns and the line-out maul.

“Our line-out maul was a tool that we used very well. But I think again, the breakdown that I spoke about last week, this week I think we conceded two again from the side and flying in, meaning that the guys off the ball are not working hard, so they’re late and trying to compensate for that,” he explained.

Katywa also lamented the players’ selfishness near the try line, as well as an overconfidence that has led to costly errors.

“We tried to play a more power game and it worked. But then our guys just decided to become try-line fever, selfish, and it’s something that is bothering me,” he remarked.

“Guys are overconfident sometimes where we should just be exiting, putting pressure, and then starting all over. Instead, we start running the ball inside our own 22, make a mistake, and get punished for it.”

Looking ahead, Katywa is focused on their upcoming Week 9 fixture against unbeaten Nondies, where they aim to address the mistakes made and continue their pursuit of success.
