The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has expressed confidence in Kenya co-hosting the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025 tournament.

he country won the rights to stage the continental showpiece, which is scheduled to start in February next year, alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

However, there were reports in recent weeks that Kenya was expected to be removed due to the slow level of preparation.

Motsepe, who arrived in the country on Thursday and had the opportunity to visit several facilities including the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), Kasarani, has assured football stakeholders that Kenya will remain as one of the co-hosts.

“We have toured Kasarani, Ulinzi, Police Sacco and Nyayo, and I can confidently say there is progress.

The next time I return will be for the CHAN and we are set to have the most successful edition in the history of the competition,” he stated.

President William Ruto’s assurance

The South African citizen also had a meeting with Kenya’s President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi, where they discussed issues related to the upcoming tournaments.

Motsepe was accompanied by other key officials from CAF including the Secretary-General Veron Mosengo-Omba and Vice-President Seidou Mbombo Njoya.

Shortly after the discussions, President Ruto released a statement, making it clear that everything will be ready in time.  

“Kenya is pulling all the stops to be ready to host the African Nations Championships (CHAN) in February 2025. Consequently, renovations at Moi Sports Centre Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium are progressing according to plan.

Ulinzi Sports Complex and Police Sacco Stadium in Nairobi, and Kirigiti Stadium (Kiambu), which will be used for training ahead of CHAN, are also under renovation and will be ready ahead of the championships,” read part of his statement.

Besides CHAN, Kenya will also co-host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside its two neighbors.
