The FKF Leagues and competitions committee has delivered its ruling on the chaotic and abandoned second-leg play-off match between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United.

In the judgement delivered on Friday evening, the committee addressed the dramatic events that unfolded at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on October 6, 2026. The promotion fixture came to an abrupt halt in the 64th minute after a penalty was awarded to Mombasa United.

The situation deteriorated rapidly when Kariobangi Sharks players surrounded and accosted the center referee John Sulwe which was followed by a pitch invasion from a section of supporters and the club’s kit manager, Mr Patrick Paul Otieno, resulting in a physical assault on the match official.

Following exhaustive hearings and reviews of matchday reports on October 9, 2026, the committee issued its official determinations and sanctions. In reaching its final decision, the committee ruled:

“THAT in accordance with Art. 3.3.2 as read with Art. 3.3.3 of the Rules & Regulations Governing Kenyan Football (2019), the Committee declares that the match shall be forfeited by Kariobangi Sharks FC and the same shall be awarded to Mombasa United FC on a 2-0 score”.
