Mombasa United have taken a crucial step towards securing a place in the SportPesa League after edging Kariobangi Sharks 2-1 in the first leg of the promotion/relegation playoffs at Mbaraki Sports Club on Thursday afternoon.
The two-legged playoff has been surrounded by weeks of back-and-forth, including court battles, before the two sides finally settled their differences on the pitch.
With promotion and top-flight survival at stake, Mombasa United had the chance to host the opening leg at home and made the most of it, securing a narrow advantage ahead of the return match in Nairobi.

The two sides battled through a cagey first half, with both teams creating chances but failing to capitalise.
David Polepole missed a crucial opportunity to give Sharks the lead, while Waziri Shentembo also had a chance to put the home side ahead before the teams went into the break level.
The second half started brightly from both sides, but it eventually paid off for the home team, who were awarded a spot-kick after Peter Abiola was brought down inside the box.
Dennis Mabeya stepped up from the spot and calmly converted to give the Abdi Moali charges the lead.

Buoyed by home fans and aided by the coastal climate, the hosts doubled their advantage when Mzee delivered a pin-point cross on the overlap, met by Shentembo who slotted home from close range to give his team a two-goal cushion.
Sharks, who finished 16th in the top flight last season, desperately needed to respond as soon as possible.
However, their breakthrough came too late, with Wayne Dalvine off the bench reducing the deficit in the 83rd minute to give Sharks hope of a comeback.

Time, though, was not on their side, as Mombasa United who were among three clubs initially set to earn automatic promotion into the SportPesa League after finishing third in the National Super League last season, held on to claim a valuable home victory.
With everything still to play for, the two sides will meet in Nairobi on Tuesday, October 6, with the venue yet to be announced. Sharks will be seeking a comeback, while Mombasa United will look to protect their advantage.
A comeback victory of any scoreline for Sharks would see them retain their SportPesa League status, while Mombasa United will secure their first-ever promotion to the top flight if they maintain their lead and win the tie on aggregate.
