Gor Mahia succumb to home defeat against Pyramids FC in CAF Champions League first leg

Egyptian giants Pyramids FC produced a fantastic away performance at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday afternoon, handing SportPesa League champions Gor Mahia a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of their 2026/27 CAF Champions League First Preliminary Round tie.

Despite head coach Charles Akonnor framing the clash as a chance for David to defeat Goliath on home soil, K’Ogalo struggled to breach a disciplined Egyptian defense and were ultimately outmaneuvered by the tactical precision of Rhulani Mokwena’s side.

The result marks Gor Mahia’s second continental home loss against Egyptian opposition, following Al Ahly’s 3-0 victory at the same venue in 2024.

Gor Mahia almost capitalized on a dramatic opening inside two minutes when Pyramids goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy gave the ball away outside the 18-yard box. Ebenezer Assifuah gathered the loose ball, set himself, and fired toward goal, only to see defender Ahmed Samy execute a heroic goal-line clearance.

Two minutes later, Patrick Essombe won a physical duel on the flank and floated a cross toward Shariff Musa, but the attack broke down.

Pyramids responded with lethal efficiency in the 5th minute when Mostafa Fathi’s dangerous wing delivery was punched away by Byrne Omondi, falling directly to Walid El Karti, who volleyed home to hand the visitors an early lead.

Pyramids were forced into an early substitution in the 20th minute when Mahmoud Marei suffered a head injury following a collision with Assifuah, bringing on Eyad El Sayed. Shortly after the mandatory hydration break, Mahmoud Saber picked up the game’s first booking in the 27th minute for a tactical foul on Essombe.

The visitors immediately launched another counter-attack as Fathi danced past the K’Ogalo backline, but Omondi stood firm to punch his shot away.

A fluid passing sequence unlocked the Gor Mahia defense as Magdy set up Saber to double the visitors’ lead heading into the break.

Gor Mahia started the second half with renewed intensity and nearly pulled one back within a minute of the restart when Essombe unleashed a ferocious strike that was parried into the path of Musa, who dragged the rebound wide. Pushing for a lifeline, Akonnor made a double substitution, introducing Dan Sakari and Jackson Dwang for Ebenezer Ocran and Alpha Onyango.

However, Pyramids continued to threaten on the break, coming close to tripling their lead in the 80th minute when Ahmed Benbouali tested Omondi twice in rapid succession, forcing the Gor Mahia custodian into a brilliant double save.

K’Ogalo pressed late for a vital goal, coming agonisingly close in the 86th minute when substitute Paul Okoth rose highest to meet a Shariff Musa cross, only to see his powerful header crash off the woodwork.

With two away goals conceded, Gor Mahia face a monumental task heading into the return leg at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on Sunday, September 13. Akonnor’s men will need atleast three unanswered goals to turnaround the deficit in Egypt and keep their continental group stage ambitions alive.
