Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor blamed costly errors for K’Ogalo’s 2-0 defeat to Egyptian giants Pyramids FC in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary-round tie at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

Reflecting on the match, the Ghanaian tactician emphasized that elite continental opposition strictly punish fine-margin mistakes.

“Before this game, I’ve always talked about the little details and that is what we saw in the early minutes. We had a chance to score, it didn’t happen, and immediately after that we conceded a goal. When you talk about an experienced team,a former champion, the least mistake you make will be punished.”

In the second minute, Gor Mahia made a bright start after Pyramids goalkeeper Ahmed Elshenany misjudged a play and surrendered possession outside his 18-yard box.

Ebenezer Assifuah pounced on the loose ball in an advantageous attacking position, set himself, and fired toward goal only for defender Ahmed Samy to race back and pull off goal-line clearance.

Pyramids responded immediately and just three minutes later on the counter when Mostafa Fathi whipped in a dangerous delivery from the wing, forcing Gor Mahia goalkeeper Bryne Omondi to punch the ball clear.

The punch fell directly at the mercy of Walid El Karti, who made no mistake in slotting home the 5th-minute opener for the 2025 Egyptian champions.

In response to the first-half midfield imbalance, Akonnor made strategic alterations, shifting Alpha Onyango back into his natural deeper role after he struggled higher up the pitch.

The introduction of Dwang’ Jackson and Ben Stanley Omondi off the bench injected dynamic attacking movement, allowing Gor Mahia to dominate the final 25 minutes.

Responding to questions regarding Dwang’ Jackson’s role as an impact substitute, Akonnor clarified that starting decisions were based on training sharpness.

“Jackson loves to have the ball all the time, but this time around it was about being tactically disciplined and defensive when we didn’t have the ball. In the second half, he showcased what he’s made of,but I started with the right players based on the form and readiness shown over the training week.”

Despite the deficit, the Ghanaian tactician remained resolute, praising his players’ second-half fightback and maintaining belief ahead of the trip to Egypt.

“They were smarter and more experienced but in the second half, we played very well and showed good signs. We will find a strategy for Cairo and see the way forward. These boys need to be encouraged and given self-belief.”
