Kabras finally slay rivals KCB to snatch 2026 Driftwood 7s glory

Kabras Sugar got the better of perennial rivals KCB Rugby to lift the 2026 Driftwood 7s title with a narrow 15-5 revenge victory on Sunday afternoon at Mombasa Sports Club.

Having fallen to the Bankers in their previous two meetings in the 2026 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit, including the final at the Prinsloo 7s, Kabras really needed to avenge those defeats, and they got off to a good start.

KCB drew first blood when Jackson Sekata fumbled a handling opportunity amid a frantic scramble for possession. 

Festus Shiasi then slotted a kick to the right wing, sprinted forward, and leaped to ground the ball for five points, giving his side the lead before halftime.

However, Griffin Chao’s unconverted try levelled things up after a good offload by Siketa, and Kabras were the better side for much of the second half.

Kenya 7s star Kevin Wekesa would then create an overload, beating his national team-mate Vincent Onyala before stretching over the whitewash to put his side ahead.

Kabras wanted to seal the win, and Siketa continued to dominate proceedings with a good play that set up Chao, who made no mistake as he dotted the ball down to give his side the winning try.

Kabras booked their place in the final after topping Group A on Saturday. They dispatched the Uganda 7s Select side in the Main Cup quarterfinals before getting the better of the Daystar Falcons in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, KCB, who were aiming to defend the title they won last season, also enjoyed a strong outing on Saturday, winning all their matches.

They narrowly saw off Nondies to set up a semifinal clash with the formidable Menengai Oilers, whom they defeated at sudden death. However, they were unable this time to overcome Kabras and retain their crown.

Meanwhile, Falcons managed to beat the Oilers 21-5 to finish third, while Zetech Oaks earned promotion to Division 1 after defeating Kabete Stallions 36-7 in the Division 2 final.

Now, after the coastal tournament, the teams on the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit will head to Embu for the fifth leg of the tournament, scheduled for September 5–6, before moving on to the final leg, the Christie Sevens in Nairobi, on September 12–13.
