The stakes are high for SportPesa League sides Gor Mahia and Tusker as they prepare to take the stage and represent Kenya at the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup in Kigali, Rwanda.
The 47th edition of the tournament, which features top clubs from East and Central Africa, will be hosted in Rwanda for the first time after a seven-year hiatus.
It will run from July 24 to August 2, with matches set to be played at Amahoro Stadium and Kigali Pele Stadium.

Established in 1974 by the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), the tournament was rebranded as the CECAFA Kagame Cup in 2002 after President Paul Kagame became its sponsor.
The competition has since served as both a symbol of regional unity and a vital source of financial support for football across East and Central Africa.
What Gor Mahia and Tusker stand to win at the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup
Gor Mahia and Tusker will be joined by 10 other top clubs as they battle not only for regional supremacy but also for the lucrative prize money on offer for the top three finishers.
Record Kenyan champions K’Ogalo and 13-time SportPesa League winners Tusker both have a chance to walk away USD 30,000 (approximately KSh3.87 million) richer if either side lifts the title.
The runners-up will pocket USD 20,000 (approximately KSh2.58 million), while the third-placed team will receive USD 10,000 (approximately KSh1.29 million).

The stakes are even higher under the tournament’s unforgiving format.
With 12 teams divided into three groups of four, only the three group winners and the single best runner-up across the competition will progress directly to the semi-finals.
For Gor, the primary objective is to end a 41-year regional title drought, having last won the CECAFA Kagame Cup in 1985.
Tusker, meanwhile, remain the last Kenyan side to lift the trophy after edging Uganda Revenue Authority 2-1 in the 2008 final.
Drawn in Group A, the Charles Akonnor men will begin their campaign on Friday, July 24, when they lock horns with tournament hosts and Rwandan giants APR FC at Amahoro Stadium.
Following the opener, K’Ogalo will return to action on Monday, July 27, to face Ugandan heavyweights Vipers SC before wrapping up their group-stage campaign on Thursday, July 30 against Djiboutian outfit FC Garde Républicaine.
Tusker, who entered the competition as late replacements following the sudden withdrawal of Sudanese giants Al Merrikh, have been drawn in Group C.
Under the guidance of head coach Julien Mette, the FKF Cup winners will launch their regional campaign against tournament favourites Al Hilal of Sudan on Sunday, July 26, before taking on hosts Rayon Sports and Zanzibar’s KVZ SC in their remaining group fixtures.

The matches will be broadcast on Azam TV, while the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA) is also expected to stream selected games live.
