New Zealand will be chasing their first ever World Cup victory when they take on Iran on Tuesday morning in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group G opener at the SoFi Stadium.

The last time the All Whites graced the global stage was at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, which marked only their second appearance at the tournament.

They managed to finish the group stage unbeaten, recording three consecutive draws against Slovakia, Italy, and Paraguay.

This time around, they will be aiming to secure their maiden World Cup win and potentially reach the knockout rounds for the first time.

New Zealand, who debuted at the World Cup in 1982, have failed to secure a win in any of their six matches at the finals (D3 L3); only Honduras (9) and Egypt (7) have played more matches without ever recording a triumph.

With the OFC having a direct berth to the World Cup for the first time, there was plenty of excitement across the region as to who would snatch that ticket, and New Zealand wasted little time in showing themselves as the team to beat.

The All Whites racked up big wins against Tahiti (3-0), Vanuatu (8-1), and Samoa (8-0) to lock in a date with Fiji in the third round.

Their dominance continued as they thrashed the Bula Boys 7-0 in Wellington on 21 March 2025, before sealing qualification three days later with a 3-0 victory over New Caledonia in Auckland.

On the other hand, things haven’t gone smoothly in preparation for the tournament for Iran, as they managed to arrive in the United States for the first time at this World Cup on Sunday, landing at Los Angeles International Airport and holding a press conference on the same day that a peace deal between the two nations was announced.

Due to strict geopolitical arrangements and visa constraints managed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the squad has been forced to set up its tournament base camp across the border in Tijuana, Mexico.

The team’s recent run includes wins over Costa Rica and Mali, keeping clean sheets in the 5-0 and 2-0 victories respectively, sandwiching a 3-1 success over Gambia.

Having secured a win each at the 2018 and 2022 finals, Iran now seeks to add another to boost their prospects of reaching the round of 32 in North America.

What time does the Iran vs New Zealand match kick off?

The two sides will be locking horns on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at the SoFi Stadium from 4 am East African time.

Iran vs New Zealand head-to-head record and recent meetings

This will be only the third ever meeting between the two nations, and their first in a competitive fixture.

The two sides played out a goalless draw in their maiden encounter in Auckland back in August 1973. Fast forward to 2003, and Iran were 3-0 winners when they clashed in Tehran.

Iran vs New Zealand prediction and betting tips

Iran comes into the tournament on the back of a three-match winning streak.

In contrast, New Zealand has struggled significantly against non-Oceania opposition, losing nine of their last 11 outings, including a brutal 4-0 warm-up loss against Haiti.

New Zealand’s attack relies almost entirely on aerial service to Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood.

If Iran’s midfield double-pivot cuts off the supply lines, the “All Whites” will find it incredibly tough to create high-quality chances, as seen in their recent shutout losses.

Iran are coming into this match as the clear favorites to win, as they have a strong squad that can deliver the result, but New Zealand are desperately needing that first-ever World Cup victory, so they can’t be ruled out.
