Amad Diallo's late strike hands Ivory Coast winning start against Ecuador

Manchester United winger Amad Diallo emerged as Ivory Coast’s hero after coming off the bench to score a dramatic late winner as the former African champions defeated Ecuador 1-0 in their opening Group E match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Elephants looked destined to settle for a draw for long periods of the contest, but Diallo’s 90th-minute strike ensured Emerse Fae’s men began their World Cup campaign with all three points in a hard-fought encounter against the South American side in Philadelphia.

Ivory Coast started with Yahia Fofana in goal behind a back four of Guela Doue, Wilfried Singo, Emmanuel Agbadou and Ghislain Konan. The midfield trio consisted of Franck Kessie, Seko Fofana and Oumar Diakite, while Nicolas Pepe, Yan Diomande and Elye Wahi led the attack.

Ecuador, meanwhile, lined up with Hernan Galindez in goal, protected by Alan Franco, Joel Ordonez, Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapie. Moises Caicedo, Pedro Vite and John Yeboah operated in midfield, while Gonzalo Plata, captain Enner Valencia and Alan Minda spearheaded their attack.

The South Americans made a bright start and were unlucky not to take the lead during a dominant opening half-hour. Valencia fired over the bar from a promising position before Ecuador twice rattled the woodwork.

In the 24th minute, John Yeboah capitalized on a defensive lapse by Agbadou, cut inside and curled a brilliant effort against the crossbar. Just six minutes later, Pedro Vite threaded a perfectly weighted through ball to Alan Minda, whose close-range effort also struck the woodwork.

Those chances appeared to wake Ivory Coast up. The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations champions gradually gained control of possession and began to threaten through the lively Diomande and the experienced Pepe, although their final ball often lacked precision.

After the break, Ivory Coast came even closer when Pepe delivered an inviting low cross that Elye Wahi met at the near post, only to see his effort crash against the crossbar in the 52nd minute.

Sensing the need for fresh attacking impetus, coach Emerse Fae introduced Amad Diallo in the 56th minute for Bazoumana Toure. The substitution immediately gave the Elephants greater creativity and penetration in the final third.

Ecuador still carried a threat on the counterattack, with Gonzalo Plata forcing Yahia Fofana into a fine save from distance in the 68th minute, but their influence faded as the match wore on.

Just when the contest seemed headed for a stalemate, Ivory Coast produced a moment of quality. Wilfried Singo surged down the right flank with a powerful run before delivering a precise square pass into the penalty area.

Diallo timed his movement perfectly and calmly side-footed the ball beyond Galindez to send the Ivory Coast bench and supporters into wild celebrations.

World Cup games

The late goal not only secured a precious victory but also ended Ecuador’s impressive 19-match unbeaten run. It marked a dream start for the Elephants, who are now well placed ahead of a daunting Group E showdown against Germany.

For Diallo, whose omission from the starting lineup had raised eyebrows before kick-off, the goal was the perfect response.

The Manchester United forward may well have done enough to force his way into the starting eleven for Ivory Coast’s next World Cup fixture as they look to build on an encouraging opening-night victory.
