- Kenya 7s qualification hopes for next season’s HSBC SVNS Division 1 now depend on other results going their way.
- Shujaa are clinging to a glimmer of hope after missing out on a quarter-final berth at the Bordeaux 7s.
- They will face Germany in the ninth-place semi-final and will be hoping that both the USA and Great Britain fail to progress beyond the quarter-finals in their respective matches.
Kenya 7s hopes of securing qualification for the 2026 HSBC SVNS 1 next season now hang in the balance, and they will be clinging to a glimmer of hope after missing out on the Main Cup quarter-finals at the Bordeaux 7s.
Shujaa have endured a rough outing in the third and final leg of the World Championship, finishing a challenging Pool A campaign without registering a win or earning any bonus points.
They began their campaign with back-to-back defeats on Friday, opening the weekend with a tough 31-12 loss to Fiji before suffering a 26-5 defeat to fellow African side South Africa’s Blitzboks in their second match of the day.

On Saturday morning at Stade de Bordeaux, Shujaa needed nothing less than a victory to keep their quarter-final hopes alive, but they ultimately fell 14-5 to Great Britain.
Charlton Kerr handed Great Britain the lead after capitalising on a kick ahead. He outpaced the Shujaa defence to dot down, with the conversion extending the advantage to 7-0.
Just before halftime, Great Britain tightened their grip on the contest by punishing Kenya’s poor ball handling. Finley Lloyd-Gilmour pounced on a loose ball before racing through to score, stretching their lead to 14-0 at the break.
The second half was a much tighter affair as Shujaa attempted to mount a comeback and force their way back into the match.
However, their only reward was a consolation try from Patrick Odongo, which proved insufficient as they slipped to another defeat and were consigned to the ninth-place playoffs on Sunday.
Kenya 7s Division 1 permutations
Shujaa now face an uphill battle as they must finish ninth to maximise their chances of avoiding relegation.
Their current tally stands at 14 points overall, and they will also need other results in the Main Cup quarter-finals to fall in their favour.
For that scenario to materialise, both Great Britain and the USA must fail to progress to the Main Cup semi-finals if Kenya are to finish ninth.
Mathematically, a ninth-place finish would see Shujaa end the series on 18 points.

The USA, who topped Pool B, can only reach a maximum of 17 points if they fail to get past Spain in the quarter-finals, with the highest possible finish thereafter being fifth place.
Should Kenya finish 10th or lower, their survival chances would diminish significantly.
The same equation applies to Great Britain, who face a daunting quarter-final clash against New Zealand.
If Great Britain advance to the semi-finals, they would draw level with Kenya on 18 points should Shujaa finish ninth.
In that situation, Great Britain could hold the advantage in the qualification criteria, potentially leaving Kenya on the wrong side of the cut.
Shujaa therefore still have plenty of work to do in the ninth-place semi-finals, where they will face Germany later in the day.
Victory would keep their qualification hopes alive and move them one step closer to retaining their place in Division 1.
