Omanyala set to face big guns at Shanghai Diamond League 2026

Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala will start his Diamond League season at the Shanghai Diamond League on Saturday May 16, marking a major milestone in what he has dubbed his season of restoration.

After dominating early-year meetings across Africa, the Kenyan sprint king is set to face his sternest test yet in China against a world-class field that includes Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo, South African rival Akani Simbine, and American stars Christian Coleman and Trayvon Bromell.

Omanyala enters the blocks with significant momentum, having already delivered a remarkable hat-trick of sub-10-second performances in a single week.

Omanyala set to face big guns at Shanghai Diamond League

His blistering run of form began with a 9.98s victory at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix on April 18, followed by a sensational 9.96s win in front of a home crowd at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi on April 24, and culminated in a new season-best of 9.95s at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix on April 26.

The stakes for Saturday’s showdown are elevated by the record-breaking Sh1.2 billion ($9.4 million) total prize money for the 2026 Diamond League circuit.

Under the newly introduced Diamond+ format, top-tier events like the 100m offer enhanced financial rewards, with winners in series meetings eligible for up to $20,000, while the grand final in Brussels could see prizes reach $100,000.

For Omanyala, currently ranked sixth globally this year, the Shanghai opener isa lucrative opportunity to cement his status among the world’s elite in one of the most profitable eras for track and field.

Following the action in Shanghai, Omanyala will remain in China for the Xiamen Diamond League on May 23 before shifting his focus to a rigorous European tour.

His itinerary includes a stop in Trieste, Italy, on May 30, and the prestigious Rome Diamond Gala on June 4, concluding this initial international leg at the Dromia Sprint and Relays in Greece on June 13.

With 25 career sub-10-second performances to his name all eyes will be on Omanyala’s participation in the Shanghai meet to see whether the former rugby player can maintain his early-season form against the sport’s fastest men.
