Triple Olympic champion and world record holder Faith Kipyegon has officially confirmed that she will kick off her 2026 campaign at the Shanghai Diamond League on May 16.
The undisputed queen of the 1500m race has chosen to bypass her signature event in favor of the women’s 5,000m.
Kipyegon noted that the decision is a deliberate effort to test her endurance stating that the longer distance is the perfect way to challenge herself early in the year.

Faith Kipyegon to open season at Shanghai Diamond League
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Kipyegon expressed excitement about returning to China, a venue that has historically been a strong hunting ground for Kenyan athletes.
“I wanted to challenge myself early in the season and build strength. The 5,000m is perfect for that, and Shanghai is always a great place to compete. The timing fits well with my program,” she noted.
While the 1,500m remains her primary race Kipyegon is no stranger to the 12 lap competition.
She famously shattered the 5,000m world record in 2023 and has consistently used the distance to sharpen her fitness for major championships.
The 5,000m in Keqiao is listed as an additional event, meaning it will not offer Diamond League points but will be used to sharpen her for the rest of the year.
This strategy closely mirrors her successful 2023 season, where early-season work paved the way for multiple world records later that summer.
Following her opener in China, Kipyegon’s 2026 schedule is expected to continue with appearances at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene and the Monaco Diamond League on July 10, where she is currently slated to race the 3,000m.
Her ultimate target for the year remains the Diamond League Final in Brussels, where she hopes to secure a record-extending sixth trophy.
With fellow Kenyan star Beatrice Chebet currently away from the track due to her transition to motherhood, Kipyegon finds herself as the clear favorite and the standard-bearer for Kenyan middle distance running this year.
