The last time KCB RFC won a Kenya Cup title, the legendary Andrew Amonde was still playing.
Back in that 2021 finale, the former Kenya 7s captain even scored a crucial try as his team staged one of the most remarkable comebacks in Kenya Cup history, coming from 20-0 down at halftime to beat Kabras Sugar 25-28 in sudden death extra time as they lifted an eighth gong at the Nandi Bears Club.
Nearly five years later, Amonde is hoping to win the Kenya Cup title again in the 2026 final.
This time though, the Kisumu Boys High School alumnus is chasing a rare piece of Kenyan rugby history as he seeks to become among the very few men who have clinched the crown both as player and head coach.

Appointed to the top job in September 2025, Amonde will be hoping to end KCB’s four-year trophy drought as he seeks to follow in the steps of very few men like the late Edward ‘Ogre’ Kinyany who got over the line as a player on the pitch with Kenya Harlequin and on the touchline as head coach with the same side.
It is a feat that will not be easy to achieve as the impeccable Kabras Sugar RFC stand in his way to what will be certain rugby immortality in the Kenyan circles.
Aside from winning the Kenya Cup on seven occasions, lifting two Enterprise Cup titles and two SportPesa National Seven Circuit titles, Amonde has already bagged the 7s crown as head coach when KCB won in 2025, a feat he will be hoping to replicate where they are the most desperate – in the 15s.

“We have grown a lot as a team this season. The boys understand what’s at stake, and we are ready to deliver a complete performance.
Kabras are a strong side, but we’ve shown we can hang with them, and now it’s about executing our game plan on the day,” Amonde said ahead of the title decider set for the Kakamega Showground on 9 May 2026.
To enter the history books, Amonde and his battalion have their work cut out as they will have to overcome a side they have not beaten in their last six meetings and a team that has not lost a rugby game since February 2022.
