The Kenya men’s rugby 7s side, Shujaa, have received a lucrative bonus of Ksh. 3,150,000 from their main team sponsors SportPesa after their participation in the HSBC SVNS 2 tournament that took place across three legs from February to March 2026.
In a bonus structure effected back in January 2025, Shujaa would qualify for bonus so long as they finished in the top six places in the topflight SVNS Series which they were competing in at the time.
Under the agreed structure, each individual in the 18-member squad was to earn KES 100,000 for a Cup win, KES 75,000 for a runner-up finish, KES 50,000 for third place, KES 32,000 for 4th place, KES 20,000 for 5th place and KES 15,000 for 6th place.
Following two third place finishes in Nairobi and Uruguay and a second-place finish in Sao Paolo, each member of the squad is set to pocket Ksh. 175,000.
Kenya 7s receive lucrative bonus from SportPesa

Speaking during the luncheon held in Nairobi, SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri expressed pride in backing the national team as they chase a ticket to SVNS Division 1.
“We are happy to be sponsors of Shujaa. This team is a national pride and we know you belong in HSBC Sevens 1. You should feel proud and supported by us and Kenyans when you put on that jersey.
My background is sports and I know what it takes to be among the chosen to represent the national team. That’s why we are continuously keen to reward talent so go play and be sure we are behind you.”
The bonus will serve as crucial motivation as the team prepares to take on the three-legged SVNS World Championship where the Kevin Wambua-coached side will be seeking to gain promotion back to the top tier.
Shujaa will face 11 other formidable nations in the SVNS World Championship that offers a pathway to the top-tier HSBC SVNS Series.
They will begin their campaign at the Hong Kong 7s (17-19 April) before heading to the second leg in Valladolid (29-31 May) and finally concluding the tournament in Bordeaux (5-7 June) where a top eight finish will secure promotion to the elite level.
In Hong Kong, Shujaa have been placed in a highly competitive pool C where they will face top-tier sides Australia and New Zealand alongside familiar opponents USA Eagles, whom they were promoted with after USA topped the SVNS 2 Series.
