Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier unimpressed by recent form after FKF Cup exit
  • Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has urged the technical bench to dig deeper into their analysis of current poor results.
  • This is after Gor Mahia were knocked out of the FKF Cup 2025/26 in the Round of 32 by fifth-tier side BB Bread.
  • K’Ogalo lost 1-0 on Sunday, March 8, at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier is not convinced by the team’s recent performances and has called on the technical bench to step up and conduct a deeper analysis of the current form.

Rachier’s remarks come hot on the heels of the record champions being booted out of the FKF Cup in the Round of 32 by regional league outfit BB Bread on Sunday, March 8, at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Gor, who created only a few chances in the match, suffered a 1-0 defeat in the closing minutes after substitute Denis Cheni scored the decisive goal in the 84th minute, shattering K’Ogalo’s hopes of a double this season.

Speaking to the SportPesa Blogafter the game, the chairman admitted the team was gutted by the result.

He praised BB Bread for their sharp play while stressing that Gor would learn from their slip-ups.

Nobody is happy when they lose, especially in such an important match for us in a knockout competition, which is normally very challenging.

I want to commend the FIFA regulations that allow every team the opportunity to compete regardless of the division they play in.

We did not take them for granted. I think they played fantastic football. We made our own mistakes, and we stand to learn,” Rachier stated.

Responding to questions about what went wrong on Sunday, Rachier said the worrying signs were not limited to that match alone.

He pointed to their previous SportPesa League encounter where they were held to a 1-1 draw by Posta Rangers, noting that he had already asked the technical bench to review the team’s performances.

I rarely talk about our technical matters because there is normally a lot of time for us to correct things. However, I noticed some negative play in our last match, and I actually told them to analyze what might be causing the poor performance we have been seeing. I am not saying say they did not do that but it is very disappointing to lose at this stage,” he explained.

In that match, coach Charles Akonnor shuffled his starting eleven heavily, keeping just one player – Frank Odhiambo from the usual first XI.

Rachier went on to say it’s a gut punch to bow out at that stage.

“It is disappointing to exit at this level. If we had at least reached the Round of 16 it would have been better, but football is football. Our ‘Mashemeji’ (AFC Leopards) also lost to the same team unexpectedly, and that is the nature of the game,” he added.

Gor became the second top-flight side to fall to the Kayole-based outfit, following their archrivals AFC Leopards, who were also shown the door in the Round of 64 after a penalty shootout.

Rachier reiterated that fans are understandably unhappy with the outcome, admitting that such results pile pressure on the club.

However, he insisted that the team must accept the outcome while the technical bench works harder to address the shortcomings.

“The fans are obviously not happy, and results like this bring pressure. But what we always say is that football is football, and results must be accepted. At the same time, the technical bench must carefully analyze the causes of the poor performance,” he said.

With their cup dreams now done and dusted, Gor Mahia will turn all their attention to the SportPesa title race.

K’Ogalo currently sit top of the table with 49 points from 22 matches 15 wins, five draws, and three losses.

In their next SportPesa League outing, they will be eager to bounce back when they face Ulinzi Stars on Sunday at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, kickoff at 3:30 PM.
