Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has cast doubt over his long-term future with the Kenya men’s national football team, admitting that the infrequent nature of international football is holding him back.

Despite achieving significant milestones since his appointment in March 2025, including a historic knockout stage run in the African Nations (CHAN) 2024 tournament where he led the team to a quarterfinal finish on debut, the South African legend revealed that he misses the environment of club management.

The former Manchester United first team coach was honest about the long breaks between international assignments.

“This experience in Kenya has been unbelievable, it’s been remarkable, it’s been nice but I think I’m still too young to go so long without being active,” he said while speaking to South African news outlet 947.

McCarthy expressed his desire for the daily activity of the training ground, stating, “I want to be everyday on the training pitch, smell the grass. I want to improve players,”

The UEFA Champions league winner with FC Porto explained that the limited contact time with his squad is a major factor in his desire to transition back to a club role.

“You don’t have enough time with players. Like, I’ve not seen them three months, when I see them, I’m only going to have a week to do what I can with them. After this experience with Kenya. I’m really looking to get back into managing club,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the South African tactician is expected to name his squad in the coming days for the upcoming FIFA Series in Kigali, Rwanda where Kenya is set to face Estonia and Grenada.

Harambee Stars will kick off the mini-tournament against European side, Estonia, on March 27 at the Amahoro Stadium, before facing either the hosts Rwanda or Caribbean representatives Grenada three days later.
