Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has offered valuable insights to local players aspiring to break into Kenya’s men’s national football team.
Speaking to the press on Monday, September 8, at the Kasarani Stadium ahead of their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Seychelles on Tuesday, McCarthy emphasized that earning a spot in the national team is not about being ruthless, but about maintaining discipline and consistency.
“Being in the national team isn’t about ruthlessness it’s about consistency and discipline. If players believe there is no discipline within the national team, they will not achieve their objectives or reach their desired level,” he stated.

McCarthy will be overseeing his ninth official match with the national team on Tuesday since taking charge.
So far, he has secured three victories, drawn twice, and suffered three defeats, with the most recent being a 3–1 loss to Gambia.
His squad selections have occasionally sparked debate among Kenyan fans, particularly regarding the omission of some high-profile players.

No room in Harambee Stars for players unwilling to develop their skills

The South African international defended his decisions, explaining that the selection criteria extend beyond mere talent.
He emphasized the importance of character, dedication and a player’s commitment to self-improvement.
“Certain players possess specific skill sets but lack the drive to develop them further and they assume talent alone is sufficient.
When you join the national team, if you aren’t willing to work hard, I will not hesitate to send you home. There are countless others eager for this opportunity. Those who are selected must consistently prove their worth.”
Talent alone won’t get you in – Benni McCarthy

He concluded by stressing that talent alone is never enough players must be willing to work exceptionally hard to rise above the limitations of the local league.
“If your hard work and consistency aren’t visible each time you report to camp, then you’re not only stalling your own progress, but you’re dragging the team down.
That’s not the standard we want for the national team not on my watch. Every player is selected based on specific qualities and standards, not just talent.
Talent may open the door, but without discipline and work ethic, that’s as far as you’ll go. You might shine in the Kenya Premier League, but beyond that, no one will take notice and that’s the truth,” he concluded.
